News release “SunTrust’s decision to stop new financing to the private prison industry and immigrant detention companies is a testament to the growing strength of our movement and the power of everyday people standing up for what’s right. Millions of people and more than 100 organizations have made their voices heard, signed petitions, as well as protested bank branches and headquarters to demand an end to financing an industry profiting from the caging of people of color and immigrants.

Statement “Getting a fair and accurate count is essential to our democracy and must be the paramount consideration in designing the country’s 2020 Census. Including an untested citizenship question that was clearly designed to intimidate respondents and depress immigrant participation in the Census would have made that impossible. We commend the slim majority on the U.S.

Statement “Today’s announcement by Bank of America to stop lending to the private prison industry and immigrant detention companies is an enormous victory for the millions of people and more than 100 organizations who have raised their voices, signed petitions, and protested at bank branches across the country to demand an end to financing the morally bankrupt private prison industry. We applaud Bank of America for this decision as we commit to holding them accountable, and we will also ramp up the pressure on other big banks like SunTrust to exit the private prison industry.

Statement “Last night, on the eve of the announcement that he will run for re-election, President Trump made ominous threats that suggest his administration will soon begin conducting raids, mass arrests, and mass deportations that target immigrant families. This was clearly a warm-up to the rally he will hold tonight, which we expect will feature even more of his racist, xenophobic hate- and fear-mongering. Trump is sowing seeds of hate and division and his tactics that are abhorrent -- cruel, irresponsible, racist, and absolutely not okay.

Statement “In the United States today, being a mom is a greater predictor of wage discrimination than being a woman. It is ironic that today, the 56th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act becoming law, is also the day moms -- across race and ethnicities -- must work until in order to earn what dads were paid in 2018 alone. Of course, averages alone don’t tell the whole story because, due to structural racism, moms of color face much larger wage gaps. This is a stark reminder that there is more work to be done.

Statement “We commend the House of Representatives for passing H.R. 6, the DREAM and Promise Act of 2019, which would put more than 2 million people with deep roots in our country on a path to become U.S. citizens or permanent residents. This bill would support what the vast majority of Americans want: Allowing immigrant youth who were born and raised here, people with temporary protected status or deferred enforced departure to stay in the country they have long called home.

Statement “At long last, Congress has finally passed the $19.1 billion supplemental spending bill that will provide urgently needed aid to people struggling to recover from devastating hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters. The delays in passing this bill were unconscionable; they meant that families were homeless, children were hungry, and moms and kids struggled without clean water and health care for much longer than was necessary. We urge President Trump to sign the supplemental spending bill without delay.

Statement “The irresponsible, ideologically-driven actions by anti-abortion lawmakers in Missouri could create a devastating public health emergency that harms moms throughout the state. Every woman needs access to safe, legal abortion care, as well as the birth control and family planning services – and cancer and sexually-transmitted-disease screenings – that Planned Parenthood clinics provide. Yet for no legitimate reason, Missouri’s Department of Health and Senior Services is threatening not to renew the license of Reproductive Health Services of Planned Parenthood of the St.

Statement “The rule the Trump administration released this morning is another vile, harmful attempt to sabotage the Health Care Rights Law, sanction and promote discrimination, and allow providers to deny people the health care they need. The ACA’s section 1557 was a groundbreaking rule that protected access to health care for women, members of the LGBTQ community, and others who face gender and other forms of discrimination. It must never be weakened or reversed.
