Nope. No Way. Not On My Watch.

December 28, 2015
Who would take healthcare away from low-income kids? You’d be surprised. When I was an unemployed single mom, attempting to start a business, CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) covered medical care for my young daughter, who was diagnosed with frightening febrile seizures at 19 months. CHIP...

Moms vs. The NRA: The Force Awakens!

December 27, 2015
An American child dies by a gun every other day. Every. Other. Day. The only thing that will break the stranglehold that the corporate gun lobby has on our lawmakers is US – you, me, and every mom and dad out there who cares AND who takes action.

I almost died in childbirth. Then I was fired.

This is the story of Danelle, a MomsRising volunteer whose personal story clearly shows how much we need a national paid family leave program. Please read it and join us to make a difference for Danelle and all families! *** A few years ago, I almost died during the birth of my second child. My daughter spent a month in the NICU and I had a long, painful recovery. The unexpected expense of early delivery and lengthy hospital stays put tremendous financial strain on our family.

Wow, You Did All THAT in 2015? MomsRising WINS!

December 17, 2015
Sometimes it’s hard to see the many ways that small actions like signing a petition, sharing your personal experience, making a call, attending a local meeting, or playing a MomsVote debate game on social media add up over time and make a big difference. They do. Because we are MomsRising together...

Chocolate is Nice. But Equality is Better.

May 10, 2015
I love chocolates and flowers and brunch as much as any mom. But what I really want for Mother’s Day can’t be bought in a store. For Mother’s Day, and EVERY DAY, I want moms (and dads!) to be able to take a day off from work when they (or their kids) get the flu, or strep throat, or other illness;...

When moms rise, we ALL rise.

December 30, 2014
Two months ago, my heart froze when I heard about a school shooting at a high school near me in the Seattle-area. On Oct. 24, a shooter killed 4 classmates before fatally wounding himself at Marysville Pilchuck High School.

I'm fighting for my daughter's life.

December 30, 2014
My daughter, Violet, has a rare, life-threatening health condition. When she was young, she had hundreds of seizures, sometimes 30 a day. Her hospital visits sometimes cost more than $250,000 EACH. Before healthcare reform, we had a lifetime limit on Violet’s insurance policy. Now we don’t. Now she’s not going to die because we can’t afford the medicine.

I will NOT go broke when I get sick.

December 30, 2014
A few years ago, all three of my children got sick with the nasty H1N1 flu. I ended up missing several weeks of work to care for them. I got no sick pay and my husband and I slipped deeper into debt. It took us years to dig out. No parent should have to choose between caring for a seriously ill child and a paycheck or a job.

What's on your W2? Equality?

December 30, 2014
Wage discrimination is very difficult to prove, but a few years ago I did just that. You see, the person who earned more than me is now my husband. We met 9 years ago at Columbia University, and we graduated together with the EXACT same degree.
