Julie Walters's picture

My name is Julie Walters, and I’m a MomsRising volunteer.

My daughter, Violet, has a rare, life-threatening health condition. When she was young, she had hundreds of seizures, sometimes 30 a day. Her hospital visits sometimes cost more than $250,000 EACH.

Before healthcare reform, we had a lifetime limit on Violet’s insurance policy. Now we don’t. Now she’s not going to die because we can’t afford the medicine.

I know the healthcare law isn't perfect, but it's a start that is making a HUGE difference for millions of families like mine whose lives were literally threatened without consumer protections in their healthcare coverage. People were getting dropped from coverage when they got sick and needed it the most, were hitting limits on coverage, and were being denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions.  All that has changed for the better. In fact, now 10 million people have affordable healthcare coverage who didn’t have it before.

But this hard-fought gain is at risk.

MomRising gave me an opportunity to tell my story and make a difference, and we won! But serious opposition is mounting in Congress, and I’m urging you to give MomsRising your support today to help defend this lifesaving law.

Some people want to take Violet’s health coverage away, and put the limit back on her life.

Right now, there are leaders of the new Congress who have already vowed to go to all lengths to repeal the healthcare law. Instead of working to continue to strengthen the law and ensure more families gain coverage and consumer protections, some in Congress are willing to use healthcare as a political football and risk the health security of millions of people like my daughter.

This would be a catastrophic loss for our girl and for hundreds of thousands of children and adults who can finally get the care they need without limits.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, no one, including more than 17.6 million children with pre-existing conditions, can be denied health coverage. Now the parents of 3.1 million young adults have peace of mind because their children are able to stay on their health plans until age 26. Not to mention that consumers, regardless of if they have marketplace insurance or insurance through their employer, now have access to life saving preventative care—like cancer and blood pressure screenings—with no out-of-pocket costs. [3]

This is our health care. It affects us all. We fought for it. We won it.  Now it’s under attack and we must defend it.

Please renew your support for MomsRising today to help empower and defend moms and families like mine.

This is a really great time to give – a donor just like you agreed to double your gift, but only if you make it before Dec. 31.

MomsRising knows what it takes to mobilize and win, and there’s been no greater champion of family friendly health reform.

But we have so much left to do to make the world a safer and more just place for ALL moms.

Anita, we CAN change the world. Stand with MomsRising with a gift right now.

Thank you for listening to my story. Have a healthy, joyous holiday season.

P.S. The other side will spend millions to beat back health reforms. Please find it in your heart to give. Remember you can do twice the good with one gift thanks to the matching gift offer – a gift of $25 becomes $50; a donation of $100 become $200; $250 turns into $500!
