Townsend’s 17-year-old daughter, Freya, is severely mentally disabled with associated physical disabilities, and Townsend has had to rely on Medicaid to help cover her medical expenses. Yesterday, Townsend, a physicist at the University of Maryland, visited the White House to tell her story and discuss her concerns about proposed Medicaid cuts.

News release Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a settlement agreement in a housing discrimination case with Cornerstone Mortgage Company and announced that it is pursuing a case against the Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation of Milwaukee. In both cases, the lenders discriminated against women because they were on maternity leave. This kind of discrimination is illegal under the Fair Housing Act. In addition to these two cases, HUD is investigating additional cases of illegal discrimination against pregnant women and mothers.
