News release “When Governor Dannel Malloy signed An Act Mandating Employers Provide Paid Sick Leave to Employees, Connecticut blazed a trail by adopting America’s first statewide paid sick days law.  Now fewer people in the state will get the flu with their burgers, and fewer moms will have to send sick children to school or daycare or lose a paycheck if they stay home to provide care.  Connecticut now becomes an example for the rest of the country.

Statement “Today’s Supreme Court ruling in the Wal-Mart v. Dukes case is deeply disappointing, to the plaintiffs, their supporters – including those of us at MomsRising – and to women across the country who continue to experience job discrimination. Today’s ruling is likely to make it more difficult to bring discrimination suits against large corporations and plainly underscores the urgent need for strong fair pay laws like the Paycheck Fairness Act, currently under consideration by Congress.

News release Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a settlement agreement in a housing discrimination case with Cornerstone Mortgage Company  and announced that it is pursuing a case against the Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation of Milwaukee. In both cases, the lenders discriminated against women because they were on maternity leave. This kind of discrimination is illegal under the Fair Housing Act. In addition to these two cases, HUD is investigating additional cases of illegal discrimination against pregnant women and mothers.

Statement “We enthusiastically applaud the Connecticut General Assembly for passing An Act Mandating Employers Provide Paid Sick Leave to Employees late last night. Coupled with the state Senate action last week, Connecticut will now become the first state to require employers to provide their workers with paid sick days. This family-friendly policy is not only good for working families; it’s good for the state’s health and its economy.
