We've all been there. You put together your resume and cover letter to apply for a job. You're not sure how much it pays -- because they didn't share that information -- but you go ahead. You get an interview and things go well. When you ask about the pay range for the position the response you get is, "Well, how much do you make now?" It's time to make the pay history question a thing of the past! Click here to send your legislator an email asking them to support HB 1696 and SB 5090! Here's the problem with that question: Women and people of color are likely to have lower pay histories than...

I'm writing from the Washington State Legislature where MomsRising member and super advocate McKyndree testified today in support of some MOMumental legislation on fair scheduling practices. Back McKyndree up with a quick email to your state lawmakers in support of secure scheduling legislation! Imagine receiving a new work schedule the day before you have to report to work, with no advanced notice. How would you arrange childcare? What if your mom had a doctor's appointment that day and you needed to accompany her? Now, imagine if your work schedule was permanently last-minute. It would make...
Los Permisos Familiares y Médicos Pagados
January 8, 2019

As we get clarifying questions from members, we will occassionally post answers to the blog in addition to responding in the comments. Below is a question and answer from a MomsRising member. Q. Tis the season of jingle bells, holiday lights, and family gatherings. It’s my favorite time of year, but this year it’s even more special as our state readies to implement paid family and medical leave for all. Together with the support of thousands of families across Washington, we passed a best-in-nation Paid Family and Medical Leave program that same year. We did it! There are moments in life where family must come first and you shouldn't be denied unemployment because of it. But Washington's laws don't reflect the caregiving roles that many of us take on in our families nor do they set reasonable standards for working parents struggling to find childcare. We're building MOMentum to change Washington's unemployment insurance laws -- help us by adding your name to a petition calling on the Washington State Legislature to take action. Unemployment insurance is something a lot of us don't think about until we need it most. These benefits are a critical...

¿Qué podemos esperar a...

Washington! You did it! Today, the Equal Pay Opportunity Act became law! This just-enacted-law means three big changes to your rights and protections in the workplace: Protects the right of workers to share their wage or salary information with co-workers without fear of retaliation Creates a new right of action for women who are unfairly passed over for promotions or tracked into lower paying jobs Provides a new administrative remedy for wage discrimination (which means that women can ask the State to investigate wage discrimination claims without having to hire an attorney and file a...

You know those moments that you read about in history books and think, "How could people who were around then have let that happen?" Well, we're in one of those moments. Our time is right now, because our nation's treatment of immigrant children, women, and families is devastatingly wron g. We cannot let the practice that Trump has put into place of purposefully separating children from their moms and families to continue. We cannot allow human rights violations in the name of immigration enforcement to go on. This is our time to rise. *RSVP now for the Day of Action for Children - Seattle,...
