Statement “U.S. Senator Duckworth already made history once this month by becoming the first sitting U.S. Senator to give birth; and she has now done it again by successfully pushing for a change in the U.S. Senate rules that will allow children under the age of one to be brought onto the floor during votes. This is a victory not just for moms in the Senate, but for all working parents in our country. MomsRising members across the country, including the tens of thousands who took action to urge these changes, are celebrating today.

Statement “Today is Equal Pay Day, which marks how far women in the United States have to work into 2018 to catch up to what men, on average, were paid in 2017 alone. This frustrating annual ritual is a reminder that our country still has a long way to go in closing the wage gap, reaching economic equality and improving financial security for working women and their families.

Statement “President Trump’s plan to send the National Guard to the southern border is rash, misguided and dangerous for our democracy. This move will do nothing to protect our country; instead, it will inflame tensions along the border and further demonize immigrant communities, which are already suffering terribly under the Trump presidency.  Further, blocking asylum seekers from accessing the asylum process at our borders, as this plan appears likely to do, is a violation of United States and international law.

Statement “In another shocking move designed to terrorize the immigrant community, the Trump administration announced yesterday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will detain many more pregnant women who are awaiting deportation proceedings in court. This move is cruel, inhumane and absolutely indefensible. It will unnecessarily traumatize vulnerable mothers, denying them essential health care and needlessly endangering their pregnancies. And it will potentially force many more women to give birth in detention, risking their lives and health.

News release It’s 2018, but women, on average, earn just 80 cents to a man's dollar, with moms and women of color experiencing increased wage hits: Latinas earn only 54 cents for every man’s dollar, Black women 63 cents, and Native American women 57 cents. Moms earn only 71 cents to a dad’s dollar. Here are a few more stats: one out of every three women will experience some form of sexual violence in her lifetime; women are only 6 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs; women are 30 percent more likely to live in poverty than men.

Statement “The Equal Pay Opportunity Act (EPOA) that Gov. Inslee signed into law today is a victory for our state’s families, businesses, and economy. The law will ensure that employees can share wage or salary information with coworkers without fear of retaliation and create a new administrative remedy for employees experiencing wage discrimination based on gender identity as well as protections for women who are tracked into lower paying jobs or unfairly passed over for promotion.

Statement “President Trump’s announcement yesterday on gun policy is deeply disappointing. Improving background checks on gun buyers is imperative but the administration’s plan is woefully inadequate. His announcement also marked a retreat from his earlier support of raising the age limit for buying semi-automatic assault rifles with high capacity magazines like the one used in the Parkland massacre, and came with a misguided, dangerous proposal to train and arm teachers. This will not keep our children safe; in fact, it will put them in greater danger.

Legislators also passed a clarifying bill, HB 3003, the result of months of deliberations between families affected by police violence, the De-Escalate Washington Coalition, and members of the law enforcement community.
