“We Just Came for a Birthday Party”

June 19, 2015
We just came for a birthday party,” pleaded one Black male teen that had been forced to the floor. I watched the video from Craig Ranch North Community Pool in McKinney, Texas four times. Honestly, when I first saw the video I thought it was a joke. With the overly excited officer doing a jump and...

Michigan Adoption-Specific RFRA Bills Would Protect the Personal Biases of Providers at the Expense of Foster Youth

May 14, 2015
State legislators in Michigan have introduced a set of bills that put at risk some of the state’s most vulnerable residents: Michigan’s more than 3,300 youth living in care. These three bills, HB 4188, 4189, and 4190, are Indiana-style RFRAs, and would permit adoption and foster care service...

When Breast Milk Goes Big Business

May 14, 2015
This past weekend I joined a dozen of local mothers (and fathers) for a stroll walk , raising funds and awareness for the importance of human donor milk. Why donor milk? Well, much has been said about the benefits of breast milk for babies. It is the feeding method recommended by the American...

Helen Chavez remembers women farm workers on Mother’s Day

May 8, 2015
When my husband, Cesar Chavez, and I helped begin the United Farm Workers in 1962, it was clear that the union was equally for women and men. So what better time than Mother’s Day to remember the women and mothers the UFW is still fighting for. Nowhere do women farm workers need more protection...

This Mother’s Day, Honor Your Mother’s Commitment to Putting Your Family First

May 8, 2015
Growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, I remember seeing my mom, a single mom, struggle to support us three kids by working multiple jobs, mostly manual labor in shipping and receiving at large warehouses. My mom worked incessantly, but because of abysmal wages, those long hours never paid off. We...

Teaching children is my calling, but I’m not paid enough to provide for my own

May 8, 2015
Being a child care teacher is my passion. But when I think about Mother ’s Day, sometimes I feel ashamed. I feel like less of a mom. That’s because even though I work hard and I’m good at my job, I am not paid enough to provide for my own children. I ’ve been working in child care for 13 years. I...

Helen Chávez recuerda a las trabajadoras agrícolas en el Día de las Madres

May 8, 2015

Why I Love Tax Season (and why Congress should keep making it lovable)

April 17, 2015
This year, thank to the Child and Dependent Care Credit, I saved $400. How far can $400 go? For my family, it equals to one week of mortgage, or two weeks of groceries, or five weeks of gasoline. It may not sound much, but is indeed very helpful. Coincidentally (and unfortunately), I had an accident just a couple of weeks ago. I was hit from behind by an unlicensed driver. My 22-month-old was in the car when the accident happened. Since the other party was not licensed nor insured, I had to pay for the damage with my own insurance. I have a $500 collision deductible and the $400 child care credit kicked in just in time to help me fix my car and replace my baby’s infant car seat.

Walking Backwards Through the Grocery Store

April 16, 2015
Yesterday my son and I went for a bike ride to the park and decided to swing by the grocery store on our way home to pick up a few things. When we went to check out I realized that I didn't bring my wallet to the park. We put back our groceries and my son was laughing about how it was his first...
