Statement "Connecticut's working moms and the people who love them are counting on the House of Representatives to pass the paid sick days bill.   While the workforce has changed tremendously in the last generation, our laws haven't kept up. Nearly three quarters of moms are now in the labor force, and more kids than ever live in single parent households.

Moms and children this morning delivered “Apple-o-grams” – apples with messages – to the Philadelphia City Council urging them to support a bill that would guarantee workers the ability to accrue earned sick days.

News release Today, April 12, marks the date in 2011 when women will have finally earned the same amount of money, for the same work, that men earned in 2010. And this morning, MomsRising.org took to the halls of Congress to make sure lawmakers took note of Equal Pay Day, by delivering a memento and a clear message: “Don’t shortchange moms and daughters – families need equal pay for equal work.”

News release Last fall, MomsRising member Dawn Josephson wrote to the advocacy group about how the Affordable Care Act would guarantee that her health insurance could not exclude her son’s pre-existing condition – something she had struggled with for several years, through several insurance companies. Her story was so touching that she was invited to a “backyard meeting” with President Obama in September to share her experience.

News release “Mother knows best,” the old saying goes, and a coalition of organizations is hoping that the Connecticut Assembly will take that adage to heart when it comes to paid sick days legislation. Three moms representing MomsRising – the online and on-the-ground grassroots organization for moms and everyone who has a mom, working to achieve family economic security – testified before the Connecticut General Assembly Joint Labor and Employment Committee today in support of Senate Bill 913: An Act Mandating Employers Provide Paid Sick Leave to Employees (SB 913).
