April 29, 2016
The lack of a Congressional budget resolution hasn’t stopped the Senate from moving forward with work on FY17 spending bills. So far, the Senate Appropriations Committee has cleared four of the 12 spending bills needed to fund the government.

April 29, 2016
Mother’s Day was founded with a simple and beautiful wish – to honor the person who has done more for us than anyone in the world. At MomsRising, we do more than honor moms. We empower them – every day, all year long. We unite moms to win protections from gun violence, win access to lifesaving...

Happy Earth Day, Earth: Sorry we were too cheap to get you anything

April 23, 2016
EarthDay.png I’m old enough to remember when Earth Day was mostly about planting trees and recycling. Since then, it’s taken on a whole new urgency as we’ve ( most of us , anyway) realized that this climate change thing is real, it’s our fault, and it’s serious. So it’s strange to realize that on...

Child Watch® Column: Recognizing All of America’s S/Heroes

April 22, 2016
Every day I wear a pair of medallions around my neck with portraits of two of my role models: Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. As a child I read books about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. We had been trying for quite some time and I even went on a dose of Clomid so yes, we were hoping and expecting this news, but what I was not...

April 8, 2016

Income Inequality: The Housing Struggle

April 8, 2016
“I was in Newark and Harlem just this week. And I walked into the homes of welfare mothers. I saw them in conditions—no, not with wall-to-wall carpet, but wall-to-wall rats and roaches. . . . [One mother] pointed out the walls with all the ceiling falling through. She showed me the holes where the...
