This week, the U.S. House of Representatives is poised to take up the DREAM Act, a legislation that would grant undocumented immigrant students a chance to pursue their dreams and fully give back to a country they call home. Last week, a young woman by the name of Soo Ji Lim, shared a powerful and moving story during a press conference in Los Angeles for the DREAM Act sponsored by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Soo Ji Lim speaks at a press conference (Photo credit: Korean Resource Center) As mothers we cannot help but feel for students like Soo Ji, who after losing both her parents to terminal...

On April 25, two days after SB 1070 became law, the Korean Resource Center (KRC) and the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) rapidly organized a bus of children, mothers, working people and seniors from Los Angeles to Phoenix. The story of that journey was captured eloquently by Hector Tobar of the Los Angeles Times and sharply in our memories. Until something is done soon, SB 1070 will be implemented starting July 29. In truth, however, we have heard reports that intimidation and profiling has already begun with police cordoning off neighborhoods and...

Op-ed written by Karn Saetang, Youth Organizer at Korean American Resource & Cultural Center (KRCC) in Chicago. Picture yourself as a young woman, born and raised in Thailand, and the only language you know is Thai. You have a job at a bank, and the money you make goes to your large family. Every Sunday, you go to the wat (temple), and pray for a better life for your family. You fall in love with a man in Bangkok; he wants to pursue an American dream. You've never even left town, but now he is asking you to go to the other side of the globe – a place you’ve only seen on television. You...

The reality is that as we come closer to the passage of health reform, many immigrants are going to be left out. In the face of this situation, health reform and immigrant rights groups came together to do a big push to highlight the inequities and injustice of how immigrants are being treated. Two weeks ago, the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) and affiliates initiated a petition campaign urging key policymakers to protect and include immigrants in health reform. At least 33 organizations across the country participated in this effort and in this two-week...

Join us on Mon., 11/23 -- Stand Strong for Inclusive Health Reform (SF) Communities of color from across California are gathering at the health reform table because we are part of this country. Back in Washington, DC, people like Rep. Joe Wilson represent America’s worst. On Monday, November 23, in San Francisco, we will assert ourselves as immigrants because we are America. We are disappointed about how public conversations about who immigrants are have led to the exclusion of immigrants in health reform legislation. We have been pushing for a repeal of the federal five year waiting period...

I travel out of town for work for many weeks out of a year, so whenever I am in Los Angeles, I feel like I am rushing to squeeze as much out of the limited days I have in the office. I do that so that I can spend special time with my children. And, when we can, we make sure to stop by the farmer’s market. We go for our favorite: standard American kettle corn. Only a certain type of kettle corn reminds me of my kids– it has to pour out of a self-generating metal bubble, salted, hand-scooped and warm, in a sunlit, open air market filled with people originating from many countries, eaten by...
