Statement “MomsRising members are heartbroken for the family of Alton Sterling, and deeply disturbed by his killing at the hands of police. No mother should ever have to explain to her children that their father will not be coming home because he was killed by police, for no reason other than being a black man in America. And yet, tragically, Sterling is the 114th Black man to be killed by police in the U.S. just this year. This is not okay.

News release In Jacksonville, Florida, more than 8,000 four-year-olds are enrolled in a city book club and receive free backpacks filled with reading resources, and each month, their parents receive a book to read with them. A new initiative in Rochester, New York will help expand developmental screenings for children, by helping programs that already screen increase their capacity, and training child care center staff and teachers to conduct such screenings.

Statement “Nearly every week we are reminded of ongoing structural racism in our nation that must be deconstructed. Nothing demonstrates that more clearly than the past weeks' failures of our criminal justice system to hold any of the involved officers accountable in the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, or in the video taped assault on the teen at the McKinney pool in Texas, as well as the ongoing failure of justice in the death of Ramarley Graham and too many others. Our nation must end racial profiling and police brutality, as well as halt mass incarceration.

Statement "The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce last week voted legislation out of committee that will turn back the clock on the advances we’ve made in improving childhood nutrition over the last five years. This reauthorization bill will actually reduce children’s access to the healthy and nutritious meals they need to thrive. It would cut off food programs for tens of thousands of children who need them and create unnecessary barriers that would prevent additional children from enrolling.
