Jenny Byer leads the Narrative Power Team at MomsRising to disrupt the norms, beliefs, and values of society that harm the economic security, health, and safety of women and families. These norms maintain a particular social order and are codified in legislation, social stigma, and dominant media. Counter narratives elevate the stories, voices, wisdom, and resilience of those impacted by dominant narratives, reimagine solutions and priorities, create community, and build a new vision for society. The Narrative Power Teams content areas include the radio show Breaking Through With Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, the MOMsplainer video series, comedy writing, influencer engagement, and more.
Prior to joining MomsRising, Jenny was from a stay-at-home mom knocking doors in suburban Detroit with her newborn and preschooler in tow who transformed her marketing and design background into a new career serving progressive causes. She joined Michigan's Earned Paid Sick Time and One Fair Wage ballot initiatives and worked on interfaith reproductive justice organizing with the Economic Justice Alliance of Michigan and Mothering Justice.
She joined the office of Congressman Andy Levin as Communications Director where they championed many of MomsRising's priorities: workplace justice and labor rights, paid leave for all, universal child care, affordable health care, access to doula care, modernizing nutrition assistance for Women Infants and Children (WIC), fair treatment of immigrant families, commonsense gun safety laws, expanding voting rights and more. She loved working with MomsRising during her time on Capitol Hill, fighting for the expanding Child Tax Credit and passage of the Build Back Better Act.
Jenny lives in Huntington Woods outside of Detroit and has three sporty kids (thanks to their dad) and a nervous dog (thanks to COVID).
