Paid Family Leave
June 10, 2008The moment my now 10-year-old daughter started kindergarten, I knew that school schedules were a missing piece of the work/family puzzle. From the assemblies at 11:00 a.m. that only a handful of parents can attend to the countless days when children are off or released early from school, sometimes it’s hard to believe we’re living in the 21st century.
April 11, 2008Great news this week -- thanks to your hard work, New Jersey is poised to become the third state in the nation with paid family leave. The NJ State Senate passed the bill 21-15 after receiving over 63,000 (yes that's 63 THOUSAND) letters as part of a major MomsRising campaign. That's what I call "naptime activism" in action! Learn more about the campaign behind this success story here on MomsRising.org, and I also wrote about it on my Mojo Mom blog
March 12, 2008In New Jersey, a broad coalition of organizations including MomsRising is in the final stages of passing Family Leave Insurance. This is terrific news that has important national implications.
March 11, 2008On International Women's Day Saturday, I started thinking about moms around the world and then moms in our own United States of America. At first glance it appears not, but a closer look shows that it does affect her and that all moms -- regardless of their stay-at-home or working mother status -- would be wise to support it.
February 22, 2008A few days back I was talking with a working mom who is newly pregnant. She's someone I really like and respect. Anyway, I asked her what she intended to do regarding maternity leave and she told me she expected that she would take a few weeks off from work.
January 23, 2008Cookie magazine laid out all the federal and state protections for parents who must take leave for a new baby. Admittedly, it isn’t much, but it is something every new parent should know: "Family and Medical Leave Act
May 29, 2007Yesterday, I stubbed my toe and found myself hopping on one foot, saying "Ouch, ouch, ouch!," while my children looked on with amused expressions. My daughter, age eight, blurted out, "Look it's 'Pain Family Leave!'" Of course, my toe immediately felt better and I had to giggle. But some corporate interests really do think paid family leave is a "pain"—and shame on them! *Sign our petition and also share your thoughts and experiences with businesses after reading this full post. March 24, 2007Imagine a beautifully presented long chain of decorated baby onesies stretching all around your state capital as a visual representation of the real people who need the policies being debated inside the imposing buildings. Each onesie signifies one person--mother, father, child, grandmother,...
