Taking Charge of Your Health: Health Info You Can Use
Katie Herndon's picture

I love the saying, “good things come in small packages.” It’s true of so many things but especially Little Free Libraries. Little Free Libraries are popping up all over the place: in neighborhoods, at roadside farm stands, along busy greenways, and many other places. The concept is simple: You can take a book and/or leave a book. Once you finish reading the book, bring it back to the Little Free Library and pick another one. There’s one in my neighborhood and I’ve made use of it quite a lot this past year.

As a former librarian, I was super excited that the North Carolina Alliance for Health was awarded a grant from the National Library of Medicine to produce booklets that provide evidence-based health information on tobacco products, healthy food, physical activity, accessing health information through Medline Plus, and how to access food through food banks in rural, medically underserved areas. I know that's a lot of information in a small booklet but, like I said, good things come in small packages. And we’re putting them in Little Free Libraries in North Carolina. It’s a good thing in a small package inside of a small package!

We titled the booklet Taking Charge of Your Health and we are putting them in Little Free Libraries as a way to give more people access to health information that they can use to make informed decisions about their own health.  You can check out the booklet at the North Carolina Alliance for Health website or maybe even find one in a Little Free Library near you!
