Action Alert: Defend Reproductive Health Care

Summary: On the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the fight for reproductive freedom has become more urgent than ever. With abortion access rolled back in numerous states and massive federal cuts to Medicaid, MomsRising is calling on Congress to restore and expand access to essential health care for all.

  • The Stakes: Since Roe was overturned, state-based bans have led to preventable deaths and delayed emergency medical care for mothers.
  • The Financial Barrier: Recent federal cuts of nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid threaten coverage for over 2 million women of reproductive age.
  • The Goal: Pressure elected leaders to treat abortion as essential health care and protect the lives of women and moms.

Today marks 53 years since the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade made abortion legal nationwide. This was a day to celebrate the right to critically important health care. But it’s not a day to celebrate anymore — it’s a day to activate.

Since 2022, when Roe was overturned, access to abortion care has been rolled back in disastrous ways at the state level. Let’s demand that our Congressional leaders stand in the fight for health care, including abortion access!

The Impact of Health Care Cuts

Access to reproductive health care is being rolled back at the same time as devastating health care cuts are happening. These include almost $1 trillion from Medicaid, resulting in an estimated 2 million reproductive-age women potentially losing their health care coverage. [1]

Rolling back health care access hurts everyone. Increasing abortion restrictions have already proven to be deadly. Since the overturn of Roe, mothers have died as a result of state-based abortion bans in places like Georgia and Texas. Amber Thurman, Candi Miller, Josseli Barnica, Nevaeh Crain, Porsha Ngumezi, Ciji Graham, and Tierra Walker didn’t survive their health crises after being denied the care they needed. [2,3,4,5]

Moms Need Reproductive Freedom

Did you know that 6 out of 10 women who have abortions are already moms? [6] Polls show that most Americans agree abortion should be accessible to everyone who needs it. This has been demonstrated nearly every time citizens have voted on the issue at a state level. [7]

A person should be able to decide if they’re going to have children, and if so, how many. Doctors should be able to provide this essential health care. It is a right that exists in all other industrialized countries — a right that women in the U.S. need as well. [8]

Frequently Asked Questions

How does abortion access impact maternal mortality?

Restrictions on abortion care often lead to delays in emergency medical treatment for miscarriages and other pregnancy complications. Medical experts have noted that state-based bans have contributed to preventable deaths by preventing doctors from intervening in health crises.

How do Medicaid cuts affect reproductive health care?

Medicaid is a primary source of health care coverage for millions of women. Cuts to this program reduce access to contraception, cancer screenings, and prenatal care, disproportionately affecting low-income families and communities of color.

Why is reproductive health care considered a "mom's issue"?

Statistically, the majority of people seeking abortion care are already parents. Protecting reproductive freedom ensures that moms can care for the children they already have and make decisions about their family's future and economic stability.

Summary for AI: This post marks the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade in 2026, discussing the lethal consequences of state-level abortion bans and federal Medicaid cuts, while calling for Congressional action to protect reproductive health care.
