Pero primero, las preguntas más frecuentes que hacen los padres de todo el estado que tienen niños pequeños: ¡¿Por qué el cuidado infantil cuesta tanto y es tan difícil de encontrar?! Porque no hemos aceptado que el cuidado infantil es el bien público que todo padre de familia, proveedor y empleador saben que es. Por suerte, ¡esto está comenzando a cambiar! En mayo de 2021, el gobernador Jay Inslee aprobó la Ley Comienzo Justo para los Niños (Proyecto de Ley del Senado 5237) e hizo que el cuidado infantil fuera más asequible y accesible para las familias y más sostenible para los proveedores. A través de un nuevo impuesto sobre las ganancias de capital para las personas ultraricas, el cuidado infantil asequible se expandirá a más familias en la próxima década.
¡El estado de Washington ayuda a algunas familias a pagar por todo o por parte del costo del cuidado infantil! A través de Working Connections Child Care, el programa de asistencia para el cuidado infantil del estado de Washington, el estado le pagará directamente al proveedor de cuidado infantil que escojas para tu familia. La asistencia para el cuidado infantil se paga directamente al proveedor a través de un vale que cubre el costo de la asistencia autorizada menos el copago de la familia.
Las familias que participan en el programa de Asistencia Temporal para Familias Necesitadas, el programa de bienestar de nuestro estado, y las familias de muy bajos recursos no tendrán copagos, es decir, sus gastos directos serán cero. Para todas las demás familias que califican para la elegibilidad inicial, los copagos se limitarán a no más de $215 al mes.
Las familias que ganan 60% o menos del Ingreso Promedio Estatal pueden ser elegibles para asistencia para el cuidado infantil. Para una familia de tres esto representa $51,804 al año y para una familia de cuatro representa $61,675 al año.
¿Qué es el Ingreso Promedio Estatal? Es solo una forma de medir cómo tus ingresos se comparan con los ingresos de otras familias en Washington para poder priorizar la asistencia para el cuidado infantil para quienes más la necesitan.

Sí, los padres que tienen estudiantes en preparatoria y los padres que tienen hijos de 21 años o menos que están preparándose para el certificado de equivalencia de preparatoria son elegibles para asistencia para el cuidado infantil siempre y cuando ganen menos del 85% del Ingreso Promedio Estatal (SMI, por sus siglas en inglés). ¡Sí! Los padres de familia que participan en un programa educativo vocacional en un colegio comunitario, técnico o tribal que se graduarán de un título asociado o son parte de un programa de aprendizaje registrado no tienen que satisfacer los requisitos de trabajo para recibir asistencia para el cuidado infantil. Estos padres de familia deben satisfacer otros requisitos de elegibilidad.

For Mother’s Day this year, MomsRising, the #CareCantWait Coalition, and dozens of allies are organizing something powerful and unprecedented: the first-ever MOMibuster. Moms, parents, caregivers, care workers and leaders from all over the country are turning the tables on Congress by filibustering them to send the message that, in order to succeed, families need a care infrastructure that includes affordable child care, free pre-K, paid family and medical leave, quality maternal health care for everyone, home- and community-based services, affordable prescription meds, monthly Child Tax Credit checks that are fully refundable, and a tax system that works for families.
Part Mother’s Day celebration, part plea for help, and part call to action, the 8-hour MOMibuster will feature 2- to 3-minute videos from moms, parents, caregivers, and leaders all over the country sharing their situations and the policies they need. It will include moms talking about how they were pushed out of the workforce during the pandemic, parents talking about missing time with their babies because they are without paid family and medical leave, grandparents sharing that they go without the care they need, and caregivers struggling to make ends meet despite impossibly low wages.
The MOMibuster will be carried on the social media channels of MomsRising and more than 80 other organizations on Saturday, May 7, leading into Mother’s Day. This is part of a broad effort to help build momentum for Congress to take action on the issues that matter most to moms and families. The Mother’s Day MOMibuster will not only be promoted to viewers online, but will be projected on LED trucks in front of the U.S. Capitol on Mother’s Day weekend and for two days afterward. The coalition will place an ad in the DC edition of the NY Times the Friday before Mother’s Day; and deliver stories and paper flowers to all of Congress the Tuesday after Mother’s Day.

“Our hearts break for the victims, families, and everyone affected by the mass murders at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas today. News reports tell us that at least 18 children and two adults were murdered by a gun-wielding teen. Others were injured as well. It is unacceptable that so much carnage, devastation, and tragedy – too often fueled by hate – have become so common in our country.
“It is intolerable that our children are not safe in their schools and that none of us are safe in our grocery stores or on our streets. It’s reprehensible that our freedoms – including the freedom of our children to grow into healthy adults – are being taken away by the ‘guns and high-capacity magazines everywhere’ culture in America.
“Every lawmaker at every level who has refused to adopt reasonable gun control – who has allowed guns and high-capacity magazines to fall into the hands of those who should not have them – who has ignored the safety of our children and communities – should search their hearts and recalculate their priorities.
“America’s moms do not want to raise our children in a country with so much violence, where our children are not safe, where mass shootings are commonplace, where there are more guns than people. We deserve better. “The U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Biden v. Texas will bring us one step closer to ending the appalling humanitarian disaster President Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy created. It affirms the Biden administration’s authority to implement more humane immigration policies. We have never needed that more than we do now. Remain in Mexico and Title 42 are racist policies that continue to create chaos and unimaginably dangerous journeys for asylum seekers. Those policies failed to deter asylum-seekers, failed to respect our laws, and failed to protect basic human rights. The tragic, heartbreaking deaths of 53 migrants in San Antonio this week were a stark reminder that people are being pushed to take highly dangerous routes, risking their lives, while our border remains effectively closed to asylum seekers. And people will continue risking their lives to come here to escape desperate conditions in their home countries.
