On July 6th, Sonya Massey called the Sangamon County Police in need of safety and protection. Instead, they fatally shot her. Mothers, like Sonya, deserve safety, dignity, and respect, not violence. Mothers, like Sonya, deserve safety, dignity, and respect, not violence.
The 67 million taxpayer dollars are going to Cop City should be invested in schools, housing, resources, and in making Atlanta stronger. If built, Cop City would be the largest police training center in the United States.
We ALL want schools to be safe but we also must be clear that there is no evidence that increasing the number of police in schools actually improves school safety. Instead it takes critical resources from what actually keeps schools safe and helps ALL kids thrive.
Police violence continues to destroy and erode our communities on a daily basis.In 2023 alone, there have been only 11 days where the police have not killed a civilian². According to current mappings of police violence, 2023 is at the same rate of police killings as 2022 and is expected to surpass the total from 2022.
