On July 6th, Sonya Massey called the Sangamon County Police in need of safety and protection. Instead, they fatally shot her. Mothers, like Sonya, deserve safety, dignity, and respect, not violence. Mothers, like Sonya, deserve safety, dignity, and respect, not violence.
We ALL want schools to be safe but we also must be clear that there is no evidence that increasing the number of police in schools actually improves school safety. Instead it takes critical resources from what actually keeps schools safe and helps ALL kids thrive.
It is time to end police violence and demand accountability from police. Too many of our communities have been overrun with police and too many of us have been the victims of police brutality. Our children deserve to be able to grow and flourish is spaces not dominated by police.
