We thank and commend U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) for his principled decision, announced today, to vote against the Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson health care repeal bill, which would do tremendous harm to women, mothers, children and our economy. Senator McCain is right that health care is too important to be reformed on a partisan basis and that no reform bill should be rushed through the U.S. Senate with just one sham hearing and without a complete analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

The Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson bill deserves to be defeated. It is the worst, most heartless repeal bill Congress has considered. It would cause 32 million people to lose their coverage, cause premiums to skyrocket, endanger coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, end Medicaid expansion, impose deep cuts to Medicaid, defund Planned Parenthood health centers, and impose punitive work requirements on Medicaid enrollees—penalizing women who do not return to work shortly after childbirth.

MomsRising’s more than one million members stand firmly against repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). We have taken hundreds of thousands of actions in opposition to repeal, and will continue working tirelessly to protect our health and ensure that the full Senate rejects Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson. We will shortly be announcing other actions around the country early next week to thank Senators who have committed to oppose this bill and remind others what their constituents have at stake.
