We've got exciting news -- a mom just became one of our state's most powerful leaders. Assemblywoman Karen Bass was sworn in as Speaker of the California Assembly yesterday, becoming the first African American woman in the nation to serve in this powerful role. Way to go Speaker Bass!

As a mother, legislator, and medical professional, Bass has strongly supported healthcare coverage for children in the past. Now, join us in congratulating Speaker Bass and letting her know that we're behind her all the way in the fight to cover all kids.

In order to move important policies forward, leaders need to hear that the people they represent support them. Let's show our support now for both Speaker Bass and healthcare for all kids.

We definitely need a strong advocate in Sacramento right now. Due to the state budget shortfall, healthcare coverage for kids may be cut - not expanded! This is an outrage -- more kids, not fewer, need coverage now as the economic downturn is hitting families hard. Right now, approximately 763,000 children in California do not have healthcare coverage - that's more than 7% of all children in the state. We need to cover all kids, not take away their healthcare coverage.

We'll deliver Speaker Bass a congratulations card with your comments along with a MomsRising t-shirt and necklace!
