Speak out for SNAP!

Say NO to the Trump administration's new attack on SNAP and struggling workers!

The Trump Administration is at it again, trying to take away SNAP (food stamps) from workers and families that are already struggling! Yes, you read that right. Ugh.

You’re probably thinking, “Wait, didn’t Congress just pass the Farm Bill a few months ago that was very clear about protecting SNAP in a bipartisan way?” The answer is “YES!” but President Trump is looking to sidestep Congress and slash the nation’s largest food assistance program.

Not okay.

**Don't let the Trump Administration cut food for people who have lost their jobs! Submit your comment TODAY to the Department of Agriculture. (Don’t worry...we make it super easy for you with sample talking points you can copy and paste in our easy tool when you click through. It’ll only take a moment and you’ll have a big impact)!!

Here is the lowdown on what’s happening: At the end of last year, a bipartisan Congress passed the Farm Bill which clearly protected SNAP from any cuts or changes. Less than 48 hours later, the Trump Administration proposed a new rule that would jeopardize food assistance for 755,000 people in our nation, according to the administration’s own estimate. [1]

Trump’s direction is unnecessary and harmful.  Not only does it cut people from getting the food assistance they need, current law already requires that states limit SNAP to just three months out of every three years for adults without minor children unless they can log 20 hours of work per week. This policy alone cuts off hundreds of thousands of unemployed or underemployed individuals from food assistance when they need it most. [2] President Trump’s proposed rule would make this policy even harsher by taking food assistance away from even more people who are struggling to find steady work, while taking away states’ ability to waive these harsh time limits when unemployment is high. People are being punished for living in areas with high unemployment! Since 1996, every state except Delaware has needed to use waivers to halt time limits on SNAP, showing just how essential it is to allow states the flexibility they need to help their residents put food on the table when they fall on hard times. [3]

Once again, President Trump is creating a problem out of nothing. We know SNAP works. Our president should be taking action to strengthen it, not weaken it!

**We need YOU to speak out against this attack on SNAP recipients!

The administration is legally required to read every unique comment submitted in response to its proposed rule. Please make sure to add a personal comment NOW to ensure it is reviewed by the Trump administration!

People who are working hard to look for a job shouldn't also have to be worried about looking for their next meal. There is no evidence that making people hungry helps them find work. In fact, the opposite is true! SNAP is an essential program for families across the country. SNAP lifted 3.6 million Americans out of poverty in 2016 and has been also shown to boost our economy. [4] Further, SNAP reacts quickly and robustly to economic problems and natural disasters, meaning it is there for communities when they need it. This rule jeopardizes that.

**Join us in telling the Trump administration that SNAP is essential for struggling families and that we won’t let anything jeopardize it!

Your comments on SNAP are part of a giant effort to say #HandsOffSNAP. Thousands and thousands of people are speaking out against this proposal. And like we said above, federal law requires that the government read and consider every single comment!

The more people who make their voices heard, the bigger impact we can have. After you’ve submitted your own comments, please take a moment to forward this email to your friends and family and post this link to Facebook.
