In order to tackle the maternal mortality crisis that plagues our nation, legislators are taking heed. One particular legislation includes The Preventing Maternal Deaths Act. The purpose is to support States in their work to save and sustain the health of mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and in the postpartum period, to eliminate disparities in maternal health outcomes for pregnancy-related and pregnancy-associated deaths, to identify solutions to improve healthcare quality and health outcomes for mothers, and for other purposes. MomsRising has been in conversation with ACOG, March for Moms, along with Black Mammas Matter to name a few.

While there are some legislative sponsors for The Preventing Maternal Deaths Act, Senior Campaign Director for Healthcare, Felicia Burnett, and Associate Campaign Director for Maternal Justice and Healthcare, Tasmiha Khan, made 20 legislative visits on Thursday, July 26th, 2018. They urged legislators who are part of the Energy and Commerce Committee to co-sponsor The Preventing Maternal Deaths Act. Our Maternal Justice Storybooks along with a one-pager was submitted and we are in conversation with staffers regarding next steps. We are excited to follow the lead of organizations such as the  The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and March for Moms as they champion efforts to make this groundbreaking bill into law
