Take Action

Just as the rate of uninsured adults has reached an all-time low, this access to affordable healthcare is under threat again.

What’s the lowdown? Well, this week, the U.S. Supreme Court will review King v. Burwell, a case that threatens to eliminate the financial assistance for health coverage in about 36 states as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If the court rules against the healthcare law, millions will be at risk of losing their health plans and costs would go up for all health insurance consumers.

Yes, you read that right. MILLIONS of people could lose their health coverage.

To fight back, MomsRising joined 68 organizations in signing the National Women’s Law Center’s letter to the U.S. Supreme Court describing how this decision will impact families. Now we need you to take a stand too. Fight back by adding your name to this “People’s Brief” to stand with the millions of Americans’ whose healthcare is in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices. By adding your name to the People’s Brief, you’ll be sending the message to the Supreme Court (and also to those in Congress who continue to oppose this law) that the public is watching the case and understands the huge stakes involved.

There is little doubt that this is just the newest attempt from ACA opponents to dismantle the healthcare law.

The case has been advanced by lawyers from the politically conservative American Enterprise Institute think tank, a group that has been steadfastly opposed to the ACA from the beginning—and the plaintiffs that filed against the healthcare law are highly partisan.

If the Justices rule against the ACA, then the government will have to take away subsidies from consumers who purchased coverage on the health insurance marketplace. This would result in:

  • 9.3 million people losing the financial assistance that makes their health coverage affordable
  • 8.2 million people, at minimum, losing their health insurance
  • An additional 5 million children likely losing their health coverage
  • And, because of the rapid increase in the rate of the uninsured, health insurance premiums will increase at a minimum of 35 percent – a surge that would impact EVERYONE in the individual insurance market, not just those people who purchased coverage on the federally facilitated marketplace.

The stakes are high (millions of people high!) and we can’t just sit on our hands and do nothing. Remember, this case is about us and our health coverage. ALL of our voices need to be heard.

This is our healthcare. We fought for it together. Now it’s time we defend it.
