I'm so happy to report that the Campaign for a Healthy Denver will present the Hope Center, a Northeast Denver childcare center and preschool, with the Model Denver Healthy Business Award on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. on the playground with young children playing in the background. The Hope Center director will detail how important it is for these workers to have paid sick days to protect infants, toddlers and preschoolers’ health. Also:

  • A school nurse will explain how students whose parents do not have paid sick leave are often forced to send their children to school, exposing their classmates and teachers to illness – and that that middle and high school students’ learning is negatively impacted when they are pulled out of school to care for sick younger siblings
  • An elementary school teacher will discuss how sick students are not only miserable, but classroom illness slows down learning for all students, as well
  • Parents will express support for paid sick days to protect children’s health and learning

WHO: Campaign for a Healthy Denver, a childcare/preschool center director, a school nurse, an elementary school teacher, parents and their enrolled children

WHAT: Press event to highlight the health risks – and slowed learning – among children due to a lack of paid sick days for childcare center employees and preschool teachers, as well as among K-12 students when parents are forced to send sick kids to school rather than be able to stay home and care for them

WHERE: Hope Center childcare and preschool playground, 3400 Elizabeth St., Denver

WHEN: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 11:30 a.m.

WHY: Highlight how infants, toddlers, preschoolers and K-12 students are at risk of contagious disease when childcare workers don’t have paid sick days, as well as the negative health and education impacts for K-12 students when parents cannot take a day off to care for their sick children

The Campaign for a Healthy Denver – a coalition of more than 120 community organizations, labor groups, faith leaders and organizations, public health groups, elected officials and businesses – seeks to pass Initiative 300, the Denver ballot initiative to protect public health by guaranteeing a basic standard of paid sick days for employees in all Denver workplaces.
