It's that time of year again!

Food recall season. What did you think I meant?

It's a bizarre phenomenon, yet once again the shift from spring to summer has carried with it a string of contamination-related food recalls. Twenty in the last month, and climbing.

You don’t need me to tell you that’s outrageous. Food should be safe. Too often, it’s not.

Vitamins, Nature Made – Four products total, including gummies and tablets, recalled for Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus. See the full recall notice here.

Sunflower seeds, SunOpta Inc. – 16 products total, including kernels and trail mixes, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. See the full recall notice here. SunOpta’s recall has sparked recalls of other products, including: Hy-Vee Inc. trail mix products, Papa John’s salads, Dakota Style Food Inc.TreeHouse Foods Inc.Hersheys, and others.

Granola and Granola Bars, Kashi – 3 products total, marketed under Kashi and Bear Naked brands, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes in connection with SunOpta sunflower seed recall. See the full recall notice here.

‘Meal Breaks”, ES Foods – 11 products total in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes in connection with SunOpta sunflower seed recall. See the full recall notice here.

Sunflower seeds, Backroad Country – 2 products total in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Minneapolis, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. See the full recall notice here.

Sunflower seeds, First Source – 16 products total, marketed under Alpine Valley, Alpine, Flave, Gonzo, Stewarts, Topes, and Wegmans, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. See the full recall notice here.

Broccoli salad kit, Butterfield Foods LLC – 22 products total, sharing this label, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. Food Safety News has more on this recall.

Whipping cream and Half-and-half, Meadow Gold – 5 products total in Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming and Utah, recalled for possible Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria, and/or E. coli. See the full recall notice here.

Flour, General Mills – Nine products total, marketed under Gold Medal, Wondra, and Signature Kitchens brands, recalled for E. coli. 38 reported illnesses so far. See the full recall notice here.

Nuts, Backroad Country – Four products total, including snack mixes and pretzels, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. See the full recall notice here.

Raw milk, Organic Pastures Dairy – Raw milk, raw skim milk, and raw cream recalled for Salmonella. Food Safety News has more on this recall.

Candy, Caramel Factory – 26 products total, recalled for undeclared allergens (eggs, tree nuts, soy, wheat and/or milk). Food Safety News has more on this recall.

Frozen veggies, CRF Frozen Foods – 29 products total, including single- and mixed-veggie packages, frozen fried rice, and other products marketed under 15 brands including Trader Joes and Hy-Vee, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. See the full recall here.

Walnuts, HMSHost – Trail mix marketed under Fresh Attractions, 1897, Ciao, Farmers Market, Grounded In, La Tapenade, Marche, MKT, Pronto, PZA, The Local, and Urban Market, in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia, recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. Food Safety News has more on this recall.

Chicken, Pilgrim’s Pride – 28 products total, including fully-cooked and breaded strips, stir fry mixes, nuggets and patties, recalled for “extraneous metal materials.” See all affected products’ labels here.

If you have any of these products in your kitchens or pantries, please remove them. Few things will ruin summer fun faster than a food-borne illness.
