Get Crafty! Or Not!

You might not have been watching or really keeping close tabs, but Tuesday night, our MomsRising State of the Union BINGO card was filled as President Obama spoke about our top policy priorities during his speech including: #EqualPay #Childcare #Healthcare #PaidLeave

#RaiseTheWage #HealthyFoodForAllKids #ImmigrationReform #GunSafety #SickDays #RacialEquityAndJustice. Your voice, your clicks on petitions, letters, calls, and the meetings you’ve attended add up. You helped set the agenda. You were heard. Thank you. The inclusion of our policy priorities in the President’s speech opened doors for these policies to be taken seriously at the city, county, state, and federal levels across the nation.

We have to strike while the iron is hot! This was President Obama’s last State of the Union, now it’s time to make sure the next President prioritizes these policies as well. And we need your help, while the iron is hot, to make this happen.

YOU CAN HELP – YES YOU! Help us create something so groundbreaking and eye-catching that no candidate for United States President will ever be able to forget that family economic security policies are about real children, real mothers, and real families.

Our staff and volunteers on the ground in Iowa and New Hampshire are ready and waiting to bring your powerful voices directly to the Presidential candidates and the media during crucial weeks in the Presidential election.

How? Well, hold onto your hat, we have an idea that will put a sparkle in your eye and a spring in your step.

Imagine a beautiful, long display of decorated baby onesies that stretches across the entrance to the January 28th Presidential debate in Des Moines, Iowa - a visual representation of the real people who need the policies being debated inside the imposing buildings. Each onesie represents one person — mothers, fathers, children, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles, and others — who care deeply about building a family-friendly America, but can’t take the time off work, or away from kids, to actually be there in person in Iowa, or New Hampshire, or other states.  You.

Yes, you.

We’re calling this the “Power of ONEsie” campaign. One by one, working together, we can show the nation that we are a creative and powerful force for solutions, as well as get our top candidates to pay attention to issues that many have too long ignored.

OUR REQUEST TO YOU IS SIMPLE: Click here to help us build this powerful display and be part of the Power of ONEsie campaign!  (No crafting is needed, unless you want to. We promise!)

When you click, just tell us what word or phrase you’d like to see on a decorated baby onesie & we’ll do the work for you by making a ONEsie in your name.  Do you care about fair pay? Childcare? Healthcare? Gun Safety? Family leave? Sick days? Healthy foods? Fair treatment of immigrant families? Raising the wage? Or other? Do tell! We’ll write your words on a ONEsie and display it for you: http://action.momsrising.org/survey/power-of-onesie/

Taking a moment to do this is a powerful way to help, without having to take time off work, get a sitter, or drive or fly to a debate location. Creating something unique and eye-catching is also an extremely effective way to communicate with the Presidential candidates and the American public.

Our goal is to make the first chain to display in Des Moines, Iowa by January 28th so time is tight! And then to later display the “Power of ONEsie” project in New Hampshire at the Presidential debates, as well as at other places where the display can spark important conversations and remind the nation that mothers and families count — we’ll continue adding to the project as people continue to make onesies. (Think Guinness Book of World Records long!).

HERE’RE THE TWO ONEsie OPTIONS FOR YOU:

  • NON-CRAFTY OPTION:  Just click this link, tell us the word(s) you want written on the ONEsie and we’ll make one for you: http://action.momsrising.org/survey/power-of-onesie/
  • CRAFTY OPTION:  If you want to make your own ONEsie and send it to us, then simply get a new or used baby onesie (or a small kids t-shirt) and make it your own by decorating it with fabric paint, markers, glue, or even rhinestones! We invite you to add catchy slogans (“Paid Family Leave or Bust”) or your hopes for the future.  You can even get together with friends and have a ONEsie Party to decorate! Or decorate your ONEsie with your children, at play groups, with book clubs, or even while you’re waiting for sports practice to end. After you’ve decorated your onesie, then... pop it in the mail to us! *Just snail mail it to: MomsRising, 3775 EP True Pkwy, Unit #165. West Des Moines, IA  50265.
