Our hearts are broken this week. We're angry and we're fed up with our leaders' failure to take meaningful action around gun safety and to keep our kids safe. At the very top of our #5Actions list this week is an action to urge Congress to ban the sale of military-style assault weapons with high-capacity magazines, like the AR-15 used in Florida. Moms will be hand delivering signatures directly to members of Congress in Washington, D.C. very soon to show that that their constituents are paying attention and demand action NOW. Please help spread the word and get signatures with us. The more signatures, the bigger the impact.  And then after you take the gun safety action, please keep scrolling down for additional timely items around immigration, SNAP, and more.

We're so honored to be standing with all of you to fight these good fights. Never doubt we will win. It may not be today or tomorrow, but the tides are absolutely shifting because we are raising our voices.

As always please read, sign and share.

1. SIGN NOW -> Ban AR-15s and high-capacity magazines

BACKGROUND: From MomsRising Social Media Director Sili: I write this through waves of tears. Florida is my home, Floridians are my people. My heart is again burning with pain and anger over a mass shooting that has devastated families and an entire community in my state. This time, it was at a high school. A high school. As a mother, the assault on the sanctity of school safety shakes me to my core. An armed 19-year-old former student went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and shot to death 17 people, wounding 14 more, five of them critically. His weapon? An AR-15. Every fiber of my being is screaming that no civilian should have access to military-style assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition! "Join me in speaking out. Tell Congress to: “Protect our families and our communities. Ban the sale of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition!"

BACKGROUND: MomsRising members like you have been speaking up on behalf of DREAMers and your voices are making a difference! We are closer than we have ever been to passing legislation to permanently protect DREAMers. But we need to keep it up - we need to make sure that our representatives in the House and Senate call on Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan to have a sensible bill on the floor this month, before all 800,000 DREAMers lose their status. **Will you submit a Letter to the Editor? Local letters to the editor are EXTREMELY effective ways to get the attention of members of Congress. Help us make some noise that will be heard all the way from your town to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. by writing a Letter to the Editor that urges your members of Congress to support building strong and welcoming communities. It’s super easy!

BACKGROUND: Right on the heels of passing the largest, most unpopular tax scam in decades, Republicans are now pivoting to take away health care, nutrition assistance, and affordable housing that we, and our economy, desperately need. How? They are trying to restrict important programs like Medicaid, SNAP, and housing assistance when families aren’t working or in training – even if they are sick, caring for young children or for family members who have disabilities or are ill, or dealing with a family crisis. **Sign our letter calling on President Trump and the U.S. Congress to protect the health care, nutrition, and housing our families and economy need in order to thrive.

4. Don't Let the Dinosaurs Win
BACKGROUND: Back in 1993 two HUGE things happened. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was signed into law and the movie Jurassic Park broke box office records. Now, 25 years later Jurassic Park will see its second reboot--with new and improved dinosaurs and modernized special effects! But our UNPAID national family and medical leave laws are stuck in 1993 and haven’t evolved to meet the needs of contemporary working families! → Tell Congress, our family and medical leave laws need a reboot too. We need PAID family and medical leave so all people can care for their families without fear of losing their job or damaging their family's finances.

5. Tell Congress: Protect our health care and nutrition programs!
BACKGROUND: We have a real threat on our hands! Congressional Republicans held their Republican Retreat last week to set their 2018 agenda and talked about making scary changes to key programs that boost our economy and help struggling families provide vital healthcare and nutrition. 40.6 million people currently live in poverty and many of them depend on assistance programs like Medicaid and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or food stamps) in order to make ends meet. Without these life-saving programs, moms, children, and families will suffer. We won’t stand by silently while cuts and changes are made to programs like Medicaid and SNAP, putting our families and economy at risk. **Sign our letter to Congress now telling them to protect the healthcare and nutrition programs that boost our families and our economy!

Thank you for all you do.
