Artificial intelligence algorithms are being used to dis-enroll hundreds of thousands of families from Affordable Care Act health insurance plans, putting critical medical coverage at risk.

  • Approximately 760,000 people were recently removed from ACA coverage simply because they did not file an insurance claim in a single year.
  • Proposed federal legislation could force states to adopt these same automated AI models, risking health care access for millions more families.
  • MomsRising is urging members to tell Congress to block federal agencies from using AI models to drop coverage and reject automated health care cuts.

Automated Purges Drop 760,000 People from Health Care Coverage

WHAT!? 760,000 people just got kicked off health care for no good reason: Vice President Vance and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz recently made a shocking announcement: they are using artificial intelligence (AI) to kick about 760,000 people off their Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans — with hundreds of thousands more at risk. [1]

Instead of protecting families and our health care, the administration is letting computer algorithms strip coverage away from real people without warning. It’s outrageous!

Block AI Health Care Purges

Tell Congress to stop automated computer algorithms from stripping health insurance coverage away from real families.

Health Insurance Is a Safety Net, Not a "Use It or Lose It" Service

Health care is too damn important to let AI decide who keeps their coverage. The AI models are flagging real families simply because they didn’t file an insurance claim in a single year.

Health insurance is NOT “use it or lose it!” Healthy parents and kids keep health insurance for peace of mind against sudden accidents or unexpected illnesses. Plus, with high deductibles, many families pay out-of-pocket for routine checkups and never file a claim. Being healthy isn’t a reason to drop people from health care coverage — it’s how health insurance is supposed to work! When computer algorithms make these decisions, real families pay the price. People often only discover their insurance has been cut off when they arrive at the emergency room or the pharmacy counter.

Congressional Proposals Threaten to Expand AI Health Care Cuts

To make matters worse, Republicans in Congress are pushing legislation that would force states to use these same flawed AI models to take coverage away from millions more people across the country. [2] We cannot let algorithms decide if a child can see a doctor or if a mother can get life-saving care!

Dear Members of Congress,

Health care is too important to let unproven computer algorithms take it away from our families. The administration and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz are using AI models to remove hundreds of thousands of Americans from their health coverage — flagging healthy parents and children simply because they had zero insurance claims in a single year. Health insurance is a vital safety net for unexpected emergencies, not a "use it or lose it" subscription.

We urge you to block federal agencies from using AI models to dis-enroll people or deny care, and to reject any congressional measures that force states to adopt these same automated systems. Protect our families, reject automated health care cuts, and ensure algorithms never decide who gets medical care.

Don’t forget to sign on! Tell Congress not to let AI take away our health coverage!
