Moms to Visit U.S. Senators Thursday to Urge Support for Quality, Affordable Health Care, Medicaid and Maternity Coverage; Deliver Superhero Capes to Senators Capito, Collins & Murkowski
July 19, 2017
With our nation’s health care hanging in the balance, on Thursday morning MomsRising members will deliver superhero capes to U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski for standing up for women, children and families by opposing the dangerous proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) without replacing it. The capes are part of a broader delivery of powerful personal stories from parents across the country that demonstrate how repealing or weakening the ACA and gutting Medicaid would harm maternal and child health.
The MomsRising members will deliver storybooks – collections of hundreds of personal experiences of moms and dads from all 50 states – to senators and their staff members. They carry the message: Medicaid does wonders for America’s kids and families!
WHAT: MomsRising members deliver health care storybooks to U.S. Senators
WHEN: Thursday, July 20th kicking off at 10:30 am
WHERE: Hart Senate Office Building (Constitution Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets, NE in Washington, D.C.) in front of the black mountain sculpture in the lobby
MomsRising Vice President Donna Norton and Maternal Justice Campaign Director S. Nadia Hussain will lead the delivery.
The Congressional Budget Office has determined that repealing the ACA without a replacement would leave 32 million people uninsured and double premiums within a decade. The United States already has one of the worst maternal and infant mortality rates of any developed nation and there are troubling racial disparities, with Black women having an almost three times greater risk of death from pregnancy than White women, regardless of age, parity or education.
“Irresponsible and heartless suggestions by President Trump to let Obamacare fail will only further threaten the health of mothers, infants and children,” warned MomsRising Executive Director and CEO Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner. “President Trump and Republican leaders in Congress must rise above petty politics and work to stabilize insurance markets, stop threatening to withhold key payments to insurance companies under Obamacare, and improve the affordability of health coverage. The lives of infants, children, and mothers are at stake.”
MEDIA NOTE: The moms making the deliveries, including some with personal stories of their own, will be available for interviews during the deliveries.
