Sara Alcid is a feminist political organizer based in Washington, DC. As a Campaign Director, she mobilizes MomsRising's one million members to take action on economic justice issues and shift public policy through storytelling and grassroots organizing. Prior to joining MomsRising, Sara served as a Programs and Policy Associate at the Reproductive Health Technologies Project, where she led the organization's work on the intersections of environmental and reproductive health, rights, and justice. Sara holds a BA in Political Science and Gender & Sexuality Studies from Bryn Mawr College and her writing and work has been featured in the Huffington Post, Everyday Feminism, Mic, Role Reboot, Jezebel, and others. She is also currently a member of the leadership team at FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture. In her free time, she draws, paints, and goes on beach adventures with her partner and their dog, Blue.

Today, June 10th is NOT our favorite day. Not at all. Why? Today is Moms’ Equal Pay Day, marking the fact that moms – across race and ethnicity – must work until June 10th of 2019 to earn what dads made in 2018 alone. Discrimination is the last thing you should have to worry about when you’re pregnant, but even in 2019 pregnant workers are still being denied reasonable, medically-necessary accommodations at work (like extra water breaks or being able to sit down) because of loopholes in the 35 year old Pregnancy Discrimination Act. Today marks exactly one year since the DC Council voted to pass the Universal Paid Leave Act. I wish I could say we were still celebrating and preparing for its implementation, but instead we need to protect the law from being repealed and replaced with a weak and harmful alternative.

I’m going to tell you something that’s going to make you mad. And then I’m going to tell you something we can do about it. Here we go: Right now in the United States, Latinas earn just 54 cents for every dollar paid to a white man and Latina mothers earn just 46 cents for every dollar paid to white fathers. [1,2] This horrifying wage gap is why we are raising our voices today to mark Latina Equal Pay Day, the day signifying that Latinas in the United States have to work ALL of 2016 and until November 2nd of 2017 to finally earn as much as white men earned in 2016 alone. → We can’t end pay discrimination and close wage gaps if employers can hide the fact they are paying women and people of color less than white men.
