Quality, affordable healthcare coverage is incredibly important to families in the U.S.

MomsRising has recieved thousands of messages from our volunteers with stories about why the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), Medicaid, CHIP, and Medicare matter for the health of their families. This #ProtectOurCare blog series will highlight many of the stories we've received.

From Susan in Texas:

"Before the Affordable Care Act our family struggled to get quality healthcare.

Our middle daughter was born with nerve damage from a broken clavicle at birth. My husband had a heart valve issue diagnosed when he was in college but doctors believe he was born with. Plus my husband and I own our small business and health care providers consider us self employed.

Over the years, we often only had a choice of one policy and my daughter's arm and husband's heart were excluded. Some of our plans did not even cover pregnancy care visits and most did not cover medicines. We changed Medical providers often because even though we had few claims, our rates would raise more than 10 percent a year.

ACA made a huge difference for us. Now we can afford to go to a doctor and participate in the recommended treatment. Everyone in our family can be treated as they need treatment. It is wonderful. Now we have a plan that provides us healthcare rather than the only plan available that left us paying for much of our health care out of pocket."
