Mass moms to Sen. Scott Brown: "Enjoy the clam cookies and vote for Paycheck Fairness!"
I love my job. I got to start my Monday morning by taking a duplicate of Marianne's basket of clam-shaped cookies and personal messages from Massachusetts MomsRising members to U.S. Senator Scott Brown's Washington, DC office.
That's because Mass moms and families want to make sure that Sen. Brown gets the point: Mass moms' need fair pay like New England clam chowder needs clams! In addition to the cookies (see a picture below, aren't they cute! They come from a really excellent bakery The Siren Cafe in Greenfield, MA)
MomsRising members sent messages like:
“In the middle of this recession, it is even more important that women get the pay they deserve. WE are counting on you.” Brooks, Amherst, MA
“Senator Brown, please vote to support this important legislation for your daughters and mine! - Renee, Mashpee, MA
“Talk about being pro-family is just that - talk - unless it's backed up by action. The action that the Women of Massachusetts will be looking for is your YES vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 182). As one of your constituents, I urge you to help make this important piece of legislation a reality.” - Phyllis, Newton, MA
When I walked in and asked to speak with Sen. Brown's staffer that works on Labor issues the staff at the front desk asked if I had an appointment. I said, no but I did have cookies! Cookies can open doors! Luckily I was able to talk to Sen. Brown's staff about how Mass families are counting on Sen. Brown to vote for the Paycheck Fairness Act this week. His staff was friendly and happy to hear from constituents but did say that Sen. Brown is still undecided about how he'll vote.
But cookies alone are not enough to get the Paycheck Fairness Act passed this week. Folks in Mass, indeed folks across the country, need to call their U.S. Senators this week and urge them to vote for the Paycheck Fairness Act.
American families can't afford to wait 50 years for the wage gap to close. We need paycheck fairness now. Click here to get the contact information for your Senators - and a sample script - so you can make a call today for paycheck fairness.
