Members of Congress to Join Experts & Advocates at 5th Annual AAPI Against Gun Violence Convening This Week in D.C.
“Freedom From Gun Violence” is the theme of the 5th annual AAPI Against Gun Violence convening, in Washington, D.C. this Thursday and Friday. Experts and advocates will examine gun violence not only as a public safety issue, but as one of the defining civil rights and democracy issues of our time. Senator Andy Kim (NJ), Representative Robin Kelly (IL-2), and Color of Change President and CEO Nadine Smith will deliver keynote addresses. Representative David Min (CA-47) will also deliver brief remarks.
Gun violence has become one of the top concerns for AAPI and other minority communities, from mass shootings to firearm suicides and domestic violence, to armed extremism and voter intimidation, and more. Participants at this week’s convening will explore the intersections of gun violence with racism, immigration enforcement, and democracy participation.

The AAPI Against Gun Violence Coalition was formed in 2021 to protect communities from gun violence after a 21-year-old killed eight people—including six AAPI women—at two spas and a massage parlor in Atlanta. Over the past four years, convenings in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Houston, and Chicago have brought together a broad coalition of AAPI leaders alongside survivors of gun violence, partners from gun violence prevention (GVP), civil rights, research, and philanthropy. Its steering committee includes leaders from APIAVote, Chinese for Affirmative Action, MomsRising, Newtown Action Alliance, and OCA National.
