Coalition of Leading Women’s Organizations Denounce Politically Motivated Charges Against Rep. McIver, Call On DOJ to Drop Charges Immediately

Today, leaders from UltraViolet, Higher Heights, MomsRising, Reproductive Freedom for All, Reproaction, Supermajority, DemCast, and the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund released a joint statement condemning the groundless charges against Rep. LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) for fulfilling her constitutional duty in inspecting federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in her district.
“While this baseless attack is part of this administration’s consistent targeting of Black women in elected leadership with harassment and disrespect, the charges against Congresswoman McIver are
designed to intimidate all of us from standing up to this lawless administration.
“Donald Trump can not be allowed to use the Justice Department as his personal weapon to target opponents. The abuse of federal prosecutors’ scope and authority threatens everyone’s freedom. The Department of Justice must immediately drop these absurd charges.
“Legislators like Rep. McIver have a responsibility and a legal right to visit ICE detention facilities to perform congressional oversight — and the unauthorized, for-profit prison guards had no right to block
her. The White House’s green light for ICE to act as a rogue agency is egregious. The real story here is that ICE agents accosted two sitting congresswomen, on camera, without any accountability.
“We commend Rep. McIver for her grit and courage in defending families, communities, and our values as people. Most of all, we applaud her for doing the job her constituents elected her to do. She speaks
for the people.”
