SCOTUS Ruling a Tragedy Not Just for Hundreds of Thousands of TPS Holders, But Also for U.S. Families, Communities, and the Country
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Mullin v. Doe will have tragic implications, not just for the Haitian and Syrian immigrants who came to this country legally to escape dangers in their home countries, but also for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders from other nations – and for our communities and our country, which benefit mightily from their contributions.
“Millions of TPS holders have lived in the United States for decades, providing health care, educating and caring for our children, starting businesses, and in other ways powering our economy. They are our colleagues, caretakers, neighbors and family members and are integral, essential members of our communities. Haitian TPS holders are particularly critical in the health care workforce, and ending TPS for Haiti will not only endanger Haitian immigrants, but will also increase health care wait times, reduce the availability of health care services, and endanger patients. Many TPS holders have contributed to our country’s success for more than a decade.
“Today’s ruling could result in the largest revocation of legal immigration status in our nation’s history, as hundreds of thousands of people who registered with our government, passed background checks, and paid fees to do so are torn from their homes and families. Today’s ruling could bring immeasurable cruelty and harm. That’s why America’s moms want Congress to act immediately to protect the 1.3 million TPS holders and their families from having their lives uprooted through deportation or detention, and from being forced to return to countries where they could face serious danger and humanitarian crises. Congress must pass permanent protections that provide long-term stability, keep families together, and ensure TPS holders can continue contributing to the communities they call home. Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, not cruelty. Unless Congress acts, our government will separate families, destabilize our workforce and our communities, and cause massive, lasting economic and other harms to us all.”
