Out of Touch, Out of Bounds. State of the Union a Painful Reminder of the Many Ways President Trump Is Failing America’s Moms, Children, and Families.
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Tonight, a President who is failing moms, families, and the country demonstrated once again how deeply and fundamentally out-of-touch he is with the realities of our lives and with the truth. President Trump delivered lies, delusions, and dangerous slurs.
“His promise of an economic boom rings hollow with moms across America, coming from a President who is making parenting unaffordable while increasing the cost of health care, gutting education, undermining affordable child care, and causing the cost of groceries to rise.
- His promise to cut prescription medication costs and improve health care is an insult, given he caused coverage and costs to skyrocket and made devastating cuts to Medicaid and other essential programs.
- His boasts about immigration enforcement are stomach-churning, laced as they were with harmful lies, and given his record of killing U.S. citizens and immigrants, separating families, traumatizing children, and undermining our care workforce and our economy with out-of-control, chaotic policies.
- President Trump’s unhinged lies about elections will never justify the voter suppression measures he so desperately wants to enact.
“America’s moms want affordable, quality health care, child care and elder care; strong public schools; fair wages; comprehensive paid family and medical leave; food and nutrition programs that allow families to thrive; and a tax system where the wealthiest pay their fair share. We want a federal government that respects the human and constitutional rights of every family; and that respects immigrant families, who contribute to our care workforce, our health system, our economy, our families, and our communities. We want a system that rewards hard work, a government that opens opportunities, lawmakers determined to end bias and discrimination, and an economy that works for us all. We need a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, not cuts to health care and not senseless cruelty.
“Moms were hoping for a reset tonight. Instead, we got lies and delusions from an unhinged, corrupt leader who is out of touch, and proposals that are mainly hot air. It was a disappointing, painful State of the Union.”
NOTE: MomsRising member Vonetta Rougier, a Brooklyn-based mom and family caregiver who works full-time as a bus operator, was a guest of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries at the State of the Union address. Rougier supports her mother, a retired nurse who lives with her, and her three children, including her 21-year-old daughter who has Down Syndrome. Medicaid is critical for her mother’s and her daughter's care, and she worries about how cuts will impact her family. Due to rising costs, Rougier has taken on more overtime shifts. She says retirement isn't in the cards for her and “the stressors are different when you have an adult child with special needs.”
