NC Moms Thank Gov. Stein for Vetoing Reckless Concealed Carry Permit Repeal, Urge Legislators to Sustain Veto

Statement of Jessica Burroughs, MomsRising North Carolina Senior Campaign Director on Governor Stein’s veto of Senate Bill 50. MomsRising is the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, including 47,000 in North Carolina:

“North Carolina moms are enormously grateful to Governor Stein for the veto he issued today, keeping our state’s concealed carry permit requirement in place. Right now, someone in our state dies from a gunshot wound every five hours. Moms know that enacting Senate Bill 50 would have a devastating impact, potentially increasing gun violence and casualties even more by allowing people as young as 18 – who have not been cleared by background checks or trained on how to handle concealed weapons – into our communities. It is reckless legislation that would put us all in danger.

“Gun violence is ever-present in our lives and it’s chipping away at our freedom to live, learn, work, play, and shop without fear. Our state legislators let us down when they passed this dangerous bill, but they have another chance to get it right by sustaining Gov. Stein’s wise veto. North Carolina moms demand and expect our state legislators to prioritize our health and safety by doing just that.”
