Moms Cheer Progress Toward Universal Child Care in New York

Statement of Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and CEO of MomsRising, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on yesterday’s announcement by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul about progress toward universal child care:

“The commitment by newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul to invest an additional $1.7 billion in child care is a huge step forward that will benefit moms, families, children, businesses, and New York’s economy. It’s a shining example of what government can do when lawmakers make it a priority to address the needs of working families, and it stands in stark contrast to the Trump administration’s decision to sacrifice urgently needed federal child care funding to its anti-immigrant bigotry.

“We are especially impressed by the initial move to expand child care for 100,000 more children. The kind of commitment Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul are making to working families is what every community needs to thrive. This is fantastic news for New York and sets a powerful example for the rest of the country.”
