Chemicals in the womb: A bad idea

January 21, 2011
Last week, researchers found a host of toxic chemicals in the bodies of pregnant women throughout the U.S. Industry reps quickly trotted out their favorite messages in response: "Chemicals are a fact of modern life," "just because toxins are in your body doesn't mean they'll hurt you," and "the...

A Powerful Education Reform Tool - Kindergarten Readiness Data

January 20, 2011
Understanding whether or not children are ready to succeed when they walk through the kindergarten door is one of the most difficult questions to answer. Washington only begins to collect consistent student progress data at the end of 3rd grade. By the time the state reports this data, the students are buying school supplies for 4th grade. Unfortunately we know this is too late.

The Gender Politics of Education Reform

January 20, 2011
Education reform: I fervently believe women who are in the schools every day--as parent volunteers, and as teachers--have a great deal to tell policymakers what works and what doesn't. What we need is a pointilist approach: steady application of dots of information about how schools are working--or not working--that add up to a big picture. Will Shadow Still Loom Over Affordable Care Act on Groundhog Day?

January 19, 2011
I ‘m feeling a bit like Bill Murray in the movie classic “Groundhog Day” as I brace myself for another round of debate on health reform. (It’s like déjà vu all over again!) As the real Groundhog Day approaches, Congress will likely be in the midst of discussing health reform as they were the last...

Two More Years of Toxic Toys?

January 18, 2011
Get organized. Eat healthier. Magically make time to relax. The list list goes on. It's January, and a lot of us are taking stock of promises that we made to ourselves in the form of New Year's resolutions. Toys "R" Us knows something about promises: They made one in 2008 to take toxic chemicals...

Family, Friendships and Dr. King's Dream In Surprising Places

January 18, 2011
A family photo I dug up from 35 years ago reminded me of my parents' early friendships as immigrants to America and their efforts to bring diverse people together.

CA: Paid Family Leave Not a "Job Killer"

January 16, 2011
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Whenever the federal government or state legislature proposes paid family leave for workers, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce immediately decries it as a "job killer." As Ruth Milkman, a sociologist professor who helped pass paid family leave in California joked, "If you were to...

Who’s standing up for Nevada’s children and families?

January 16, 2011
Save lives, cut the deficit, and give people the freedom to help sick children. How could anyone be against that? And yet, efforts are afoot in Congress to repeal the new health care reform law known as the Affordable Care Act before it's even fully implemented as planned over the next three years...
