Republican Senators Position Country for Massive Hardship and Pain, Defy Their Own Constituents in Passing Devastating Reconciliation Bill
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Today 50 U.S. Republican Senators put allegiance to President Trump and wealthy donors above their own constituents’ interests and wishes – and over our country’s future – by passing the Republican reconciliation bill. It will undermine our economy as it brings more hunger, more hardship, more avoidable suffering and deaths, more underfunded public schools, and higher costs for moms and families.
“Put simply, this vote puts lawmakers on track to shatter the health, economic security, wellbeing and success of America’s moms, families, and communities; undercut our health and education systems; while undermining our economy and saddling the country with massive additional debt. Why? To fund even more tax cuts for billionaires and greedy corporations; and also to pay for even more unfair and cruel family separations, human rights abuses, and actions that terrify hardworking immigrants – who are essential to our care workforce, our economy and our future.
“Overwhelming majorities of moms, and voters overall, strongly oppose this ruinous bill, because we support Medicaid, SNAP, public schools, maternal and reproductive health, affordable child and elder care, and fair treatment for every immigrant family so families have the tools to build good lives.
“So far this year, MomsRising’s 1.2 million members have taken more than 970,000 actions in opposition to this bill, including hand-delivering more than 2,800 of our Families Over Billionaires storybooks to local congressional offices, bringing in more than 50,000 stories from moms, making thousands of phone calls, speaking out on social media and at community meetings, and last week, dressing as bees in the halls of Congress to create a buzz about the harm this bill will cause as it betrays the American people and stings our economy.
“America’s moms are horrified by what 50 Republican Senators did today. If it isn’t stopped when it goes through reconciliation, the damage to our families and our economy will be vast and long-lasting.”
