Republican Reconciliation Bill Has All the Wrong Priorities, Moms Leader Says

“Higher costs for families. More hungry children and seniors. More moms and families without health care. Fewer resources to educate our children. More hardworking Americans who don’t have the tools to build good lives. That’s what will result if the disastrous budget reconciliation bill House Republicans are advancing becomes law. That’s why tens of thousands of MomsRising members and concerned citizens are reaching out to their representatives in Congress today to urge them to vote ‘no’ to legislation that would cause deep, lasting damage to moms and families, small businesses, farmers, and our economy by cutting funding for Medicaid, SNAP, Planned Parenthood, public education, and other essential programs – all to provide enormous tax breaks for billionaires and to fund human rights abuses against our immigrant family members and neighbors.
“The House Republican bill has all the wrong priorities. It cuts hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid, which will cause millions to lose health coverage, millions more to have reduced access to doctors, rural and other hospitals to close, and maternity health deserts to expand. It lets enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits expire, which will cause health insurance premiums to soar. It worsens our country’s maternal and reproductive health crisis by blocking Medicaid and other public health programs from reimbursing Planned Parenthood health centers for providing birth control, screenings for cancer, treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and more. It also cuts funding for child care and elder care and will cause lasting harm to our children by diverting federal funds our public schools need to private schools. And it takes food assistance away from millions of families, which hurts families and our economy alike.
“Republicans are taking away the tools working families need to build successful lives, participate in their communities, and contribute to our economy while giving the Trump administration billions of dollars to separate immigrant families and send innocent people to foreign prisons known for horrendous human rights abuses. And they would fund all that through enormous tax breaks for billionaires and our wealthiest corporations that will increase our deficit.
“America’s moms want a budget that reduces costs, lifts families, supports businesses, and boosts our economy, and a tax system that guarantees wealthy individuals and corporations finally pay their fair share. Republicans are rejecting all that by advancing this trainwreck of a bill. It must never, ever become law.”
