Moms Say: Our Children Are Priorities. Protect Public Education, Stop Trump and GOP Leaders in Congress from Gutting the U.S. Department of Education.
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Today’s announcement, that the U.S. Department of Education signed agreements to transfer key functions to other federal agencies with no professional expertise in educating our children, is reckless, harmful, and unlawful. Further dismantling the Department of Education will undermine learning opportunities for children in every state, harming families and undermining our workforce, our economy, and our country as a whole for generations to come. Unfortunately, those who will face the grave impacts first will be students with disabilities and students from low-income families. If these interagency agreements hold, children will suffer and the harm will be vast and lasting.
“We recognize the Trump administration’s goal here, and in so many of its actions, is to redirect funds to further line the pockets of greedy billionaires and corporations – in this case, by dismantling the Department of Education and diverting public funds away from the most-at risk children, which further enriches for-profit education and voucher organizations. Moms reject the twisted values and skewed priorities that underlie this move.
“Nearly 50 million children and youth – including 95 percent of those with disabilities – rely on our public education system. They deserve better.”
-Statement of Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and CEO, MomsRising
“It is our children who will suffer if Congress does not step in to protect public education from President Trump's dangerous plan to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. These actions will erode federal support for our public schools and the vitally important work they do to help all students reach their potential. Spreading the Department’s responsibilities across other agencies will cause chaos and confusion and create barriers that penalize too many of the students who need our support the most. We fear that millions of students — particularly those in underfunded and rural communities — will lose access to the resources that can help them thrive.
“This move threatens to undermine the success of our students and the viability of our workforce, now and for years to come. Congress must step in to stop this attack on public education and the students who depend on it.”
