First Year After Dobbs Has Brought Peril, Hardship, Trauma for Moms, Pregnant People

“In the year since the U.S. Supreme Court took away our bodily autonomy, our access to abortion care, and our ability to make our own decisions about whether to have children and if so, when and how many children to have, life has become much more dangerous and difficult for America’s moms. Most people in this country who have abortions are moms and when states ban abortion and take away our access to reproductive health care, moms and their families suffer.
“In the year since the shameful SCOTUS ruling in Dobbs, all of our fears have been realized. Having a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy now puts women’s health, fertility, and lives in danger. States are blocking access to prescription medications we have long relied on. Many moms have to travel hundreds of miles, miss paychecks, and find child care to access abortion, if they are able to do so at all. Our access to medication abortion is at risk. And our country’s maternal health crisis, which especially harms Black, Brown and Indigenous women and moms, is getting even worse.
“Moms are demanding an end to abortion bans. We will mobilize and organize and use the power of our votes until everyone can access reproductive health care, regardless of where they live, their income, or the source of their health coverage. Until no doctor has to fear fines or prison for providing the health care moms need. Until the Women’s Health Protection Act and the EACH Act are law. Until our country invests in maternal health, makes quality affordable child care available to all, and ensures all working people have paid family and medical leave.
“Every lawmaker and politician should understand this: America’s moms oppose Dobbs and the abortion restrictions and bans it is allowing – and we won’t stop fighting until we prevail.”
