Billionaires Won Today – and Moms, Kids, & Working Families Lost

“Our country will be sicker and hungrier, less fair and less successful, and families will face much higher costs because congressional Republicans completed passage of their monstrous budget reconciliation bill today. When President Trump and his Republican leadership celebrate this victory, they are celebrating the hardship, higher costs, and pain they are visiting on America’s moms, kids, working families, small businesses, and our economy – all to further enrich billionaires and greedy corporations and also to pay for even more horrendous human rights abuses.
“This bill will bring avoidable suffering and deaths, underfunded public schools, hunger and hardship, and higher costs for moms and families as it shatters our health and economic security, undermines our economy, and saddles the next generations with massive additional debt. Billionaires and greedy corporations are the real winners, and moms are horrified that it will bring even more cruel family separations, human rights abuses, and actions that terrify hardworking immigrants, who are essential to our care workforce, our economy, and our future. Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, not cuts to health care and not cruelty.
“As the drastic cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act take health care away from nearly 17 million people and close hundreds of rural hospitals, children, seniors, people with disabilities, pregnant people, and low-income families will suffer the most. The unprecedented, shameful cut to SNAP and the new work requirements that weaponize red tape will dramatically increase hunger in America. As Planned Parenthood health clinics lose federal funding, millions more women will go without the family planning services, prenatal care, cancer screenings, and mental health care they need. As funds are diverted from public to private schools, a generation of students will suffer, as will our workforce and our economy.
“MomsRising’s 1.2 million members have taken more than 970,000 actions in opposition to this bill, and we aren’t done yet. America’s moms are horrified by the cruel future this bill will inflict on families and communities. We will hold every lawmaker who supported it accountable as well as continuing to fight for Medicaid, SNAP, public school funding, maternal and reproductive health, affordable child and elder care, and fair treatment for every immigrant family. That’s what makes our health, our economy, and our country stronger. When everyone has the tools to build good lives and contribute to our communities, we all win. This bill is nothing but a loser for our families and our economy.”
