This blog originally appeared as an op-ed in the Washington Post . Congratulations, Mr. President. Your victory is a victory for fairness for all Americans. It is also a victory for Latinos, and one that Latinos can take a large measure of credit for making happen. They gave you 71 percent of their votes. As I traveled the country campaigning for you, especially in Latino communities in Florida, Colorado and Nevada, it was clear that Latino voters believe that you will fight for them in your second term. As I talked with Latinos, one policy was mentioned again and again: your decision to...

On August 15, the first of perhaps a million or more people who qualify for the DREAM Act began stepping forward to apply and pay fees for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a form of temporary deportation relief for undocumented immigrants who meet certain criteria. Each case will be evaluated individually, but I am encouraging those who meet the basic criteria to consider applying for DACA or at least get all the information they can about whether it is the right thing for them. Thousands will join me and Senator Dick Durbin, the author of the DREAM Act, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel...

Editor's Note: For live coverage of this speech, please see this C-Span clip . This week the U.S. Supreme Court declared the immigration policy of the state of Arizona, a policy that Mitt Romney has called a “model for America,” to be largely unconstitutional. I applaud the court for stating that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. The “show me your papers” law allows police to demand that individuals prove they are legally in this country. This law is not just a problem for people who are undocumented. It is not just a problem for immigrants. It is not just a problem for...

Prior to the signing of critical health care reform legislation two years ago, more than 46 million Americans found themselves uninsured or underinsured. This was an unacceptable situation. I believe that every American has a right to quality, affordable health care regardless of age, income, job status, health condition or where they live. Too many face economic ruin when a loved one is diagnosed with a serious illness. Even for those fortunate enough to have coverage, the rising costs of health care are a major concern for families and businesses. Without health insurance reform, a family...

I am deeply touched and inspired by the stories submitted by Illinois residents regarding the need to ensure that all workers have access to paid sick leave. I could not agree more with the MomsRising Member who wrote, 'paid sick days are not a choice - they are a necessity.' Paid sick leave not only allows families to make medical decisions without concern for losing time on the job, it also gives much needed peace of mind to parents who already have so much to worry about. I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Healthy Families Act which addresses this serious public and family...
