Tune in to PBS on Mother's Day!
Happy Mother's Day and Happy Birthday! This Mother's Day marks the first birthday of MomsRising. Celebrate by watching the Motherhood Manifesto on PBS this weekend (Find out when it's airing in your area at: www.momsrising.org/PBS). As we celebrate our first birthday, we're also celebrating passing the 90,000 members mark--and that we are growing by 500 to 1,000 members per week lately. This growth is mostly happening through friends telling friends. So, THANK YOU for telling your friends about MomsRising and making us the strong organization we are today!
DID YOU SAY MOTHER'S DAY? Yes, Mother's Day is this Sunday and we have not one, not two, but three big national activities we're doing for the big day. It's a triple extravaganza! Here's the lowdown, starting with PBS airtimes:
1-DON'T MISS THE MOTHERHOOD MANIFESTO ON PBS THIS WEEKEND! Grab some popcorn, invite friends and family to join you, and get ready to watch the film from the comfort of your living room couch on your local PBS station!
- WHEN IS IT ON?: Click here to check when the film is airing in your area (and feel free to tape it and play it later with friends if it's not on at a convenient time!): http://www.momsrising.org/PBS
- WATCH WITH FRIENDS--HOLD A PARTY: Our house party program is ongoing, so we'd love it if you could hold a gathering (even 2 friends can be a party!) to watch the film—and tell us about it. This allows us to tell the media and policy makers that our movement is strong and growing—and that they should listen. So please register your party here: http://www.party2win.com/momsrising/hostparty/index.cfm or just send us an email at party@momsrising.org
2-FABULOUS MOTHER'S DAY e-CARD: We have the perfect Mother's Day e-card for you and yours. It's the one, the only, super fabulous Infant Aerial Stunt Team Mother's Day e-Card! It's such a cool card that other websites like Care2 are featuring it, and we had to get a bigger server to handle all the web traffic! Good stuff! Don't miss it! After you view the card, we hope you send it along to everyone you know! You can put a smile on friends' faces, while also spreading the word about MomsRising and saving trees (by going electronic with your cards this year). It's a win-win-win.
- TAKE ME TO MY e-CARD: Turn on the volume, and click here (or cut & paste this link into your web browser): http://www.momsrising.org/motherecard/
- SEND IT ON TO MOMS & FRIENDS: Some of our members have told us they want to send the e-card to their entire address book and have told us how: You can easily forward this e-card to moms and friends by writing a personal email to them and including the the direct link for them to click ( http://www.momsrising.org/motherecard/ ) in the text of what you write. This way you can easily use your personal address book to send your greetings far and wide.
3-POWER OF ONEsie EXTRAVAGANZA: Thank you all for your ONEsie submissions. We now have over 600! Keep them coming in! We are planning to grow this program and have it be a major part of shaping the issues discussed at the state and national level. If you want to submit a ONEsie, or buy one for us to make for you, find out how at: http://www.momsrising.org/PowerofONEsie
For Mother's Day, the Power of ONEsie display will be featured at a ONEsie Extravaganza event in Portland, Oregon called "Motherhood Manifesto Day!" Hundreds are expected at this event which features a screening of the film, bands, a panel discussion of elected leaders, ONEsie making stations, a Moms Marketplace, and more. MomsRising members in Oregon are playing a major role in pushing paid leave toward passage this year (cross your fingers). Live in Oregon and want to go? Get the lowdown from Katie@momsrising.org
GREAT NEWS! The Governor of Washington signed Paid Family Leave into law this week. Its official, Washington is now the 2nd state in the nation to have paid leave—and the members of MomsRising (you!) played a major role in making that happen! Read more about in our blog at: http://www.momsrising.org/node/494
Here's what the prime sponsor of the bill, Senator Karen Keiser, had to say, "The Family Leave bill would not have passed without the great work of MomsRising. Being able to mobilize thousands of constituents to e-mail our Governor and individual lawmakers made all the difference. It's a great model for an authentic political movement made up of people who are unable to attend rallies or raise huge amounts of campaign donations. It's a way for real people to make a real difference."
*Washington was a pilot project and is a model we are already using elsewhere for success. First Washington State, next the rest of the states, then Washington D.C.!
Happy Mother's Day all! - The MomsRising Team
P.S. LATE BREAKING: Our friend Robert Greenwald has just announced another important Mother's Day initiative. Go to http://www.MothersDayForPeace.com to see a new short video eCard in honor of Mother's Day. The video, featuring Felicity Huffman, Vanessa Williams, Alfre Woodard, and Christine Lahti, celebrates the original meaning of Mother's Day, founded during the Civil War as a call upon women to unite for peace in the name of children everywhere.
The video is being distributed virally over the internet by Robert Greenwald's Brave New Foundation via YouTube in partnership with a large coalition of groups, including MoveOn and MomsRising.
