SIGN NOW: Tell Congress to protect kids and say no to funding ICE in our cities!
Across the country, we are watching in horror as moms are torn away from their babies and kids. [1] [2] [3] Just last week, a prominent and beloved union president - a U.S. citizen - was injured and detained by ICE agents. [4] And many members of Congress have been denied entry into ICE facilities in California, New Jersey, and New York, despite their Congressional oversight responsibilities. [5] Cruelty and intimidation has become the defining factor in Trump’s administration.
As a growing chorus of everyday people have stood up to say “enough” to this cruelty to our immigrant neighbors and family members, the Trump administration has turned our government into a weapon against our people, deploying National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles this weekend, in defiance of the law and over the objections of the Governor of California and the Mayor of Los Angeles. [6] To be clear, when people from Los Angeles to Massachusetts–and places in between– peacefully stand up for their immigrant friends and neighbors to receive due process and be treated fairly, it’s democracy – not a rebellion that justifies military intervention in any way.
Our immigration system is broken and we need Congress to step up with a plan to fix our system, not exploit it.
What’s happening? The Trump administration and Republicans in Congress are proposing $880 billion in extreme cuts to healthcare programs like Medicaid in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy and to pay for a massive increase in funding to carry out harmful and cruel immigration practices, including family separation.
Los Angeles is an alarming preview of what is to come if Congress passes the Big Bad Betrayal budget bill that’s currently being considered by the U.S. Senate. This bill will make extreme cuts to Medicaid and other vital programs in order to pay for even more family separation, human rights abuses, and terrifying hardworking immigrants - people essential to our care workforce, our economy, and our future.
Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, NOT cuts to healthcare, NOT funds for even more cruelty, and NOT military intervention in our communities.
