Republican leaders in Congress and billionaires alike are all about tax credits that make them richer. But they refuse to take action to extend tax credits that make health care affordable for everyday, working families. What!?
Quick signature: Lower health care costs and make the ACA premium tax credits permanent!
2025 has been the year of sticker shock and health care cuts—and Americans are in immediate need of some relief. Families are still reeling from the inflated price of Halloween candy, and now wholesale turkey prices are up by 40 percent ahead of Thanksgiving!? Trump promised to lower the cost of living, but things have only gotten harder. This is full-blown #Trumpflation.
The grocery store isn’t the only place prices are rising. If Republican leaders in Congress do not extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits before they’re set to expire at the end of the year, health care costs will more than double for over 20 million Americans. The cost of health care in the U.S. is already high. Now, Republican leaders in Congress have escalated a dire situation into a full-blown crisis. This summer, Republican leaders cut $1 trillion from health care programs, taking away health care from over 15 million people. Then, rather than addressing the health care emergency of their own making, Republican leaders moved to their next target: allowing the ACA premium tax credits to expire, which enable over 24 million Americans to afford health care. Skyrocketing health care costs are the last things families need right now!
It’s all-hands on deck. This isn’t just an issue for people who purchase health care through the ACA—this is going to impact all Americans. When millions of people become uninsured, it will put a strain on the entire health care system, causing health care costs to rise across the board and even force hundreds of hospitals, maternity wards, and nursing homes to close. Research has found that millions of Americans will collectively pay an estimated $23 billion more next year just to maintain the same level of coverage they currently rely on.
Democrats in the U.S. House only need three Republicans to join them in forcing a vote to extend health care tax credits. House Republicans—we’re looking at you to stand up for the health and wellbeing of the people you represent!
Republican leaders in Congress need to take action quickly to prevent millions of people from losing their health care coverage. Open enrollment for health care started on November 1st, meaning that millions of families have already begun to log onto healthcare.gov to renew or find the right health care plan. Some will find the costs unaffordable and drop their insurance altogether, while others will be forced to make painful choices about how to pay for care. If Republican leaders in Congress end the premium tax credits, nearly 5 million people will lose their health care coverage altogether.
The bottom line is, Republican leaders in Congress already gutted health care this year in order to hand tax breaks to billionaires. To make matters even more expensive, Trump has also slapped massive tariffs on groceries, clothes, and electronics to pay for even more tax breaks for the wealthy. There’s a lot of talk about tax breaks—but none for the everyday, working families who need affordable health care.
As they slash health care, Trump and Republicans in Congress have given even more tax breaks to billionaires and also poured funding into separating families, committing human rights abuses, and detaining immigrants—people essential to our care workforce, our economy and our future. Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, NOT cuts to health care, NOT cruelty, and NOT #Trumpflation.

Dear Member of Congress,
2025 has been the year of sticker shock and health care cuts—and Americans are in immediate need of some relief. The last thing families need right now is increased health care costs. We urge you to sign the discharge petition introduced by Leader Jeffries to force a floor vote on extending ACA premium tax credits.
The cost of health care in the U.S. was already high. Now, with $1 trillion in cuts to health care over the summer and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits on the line, a dire situation has escalated into a full-blown crisis. Fifteen million people will already lose health care due to Medicaid cuts passed earlier this year. If Congress does not renew the Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits before they’re set to expire at the end of the year, then health care costs will more than double for over 20 million Americans, and nearly 5 million additional Americans will lose their health coverage altogether.
When millions of people become uninsured, it will also put a strain on the entire health care system, causing health care costs to rise across the board and even force hundreds of hospitals, maternity wards, and nursing homes to close. Research has found that millions of Americans will collectively pay an estimated $23 billion more next year just to maintain the same level of coverage they currently rely on.
The time to take action to protect the health and wellbeing of Americans is now: Open enrollment started on November 1st, and millions of families have already begun to log onto healthcare.gov to renew or find the right health care plan.
On behalf of MomsRising’s 1.2 million members and moms, parents, families, and caregivers across the nation, we again urge you to sign the discharge petition introduced by Leader Jeffries to force a floor vote on extending ACA premium tax credits.
Even though Republican leaders in Congress have turned health care into a bargaining chip, it’s not a luxury or a “nice-to-have”—it’s a lifesaver. Without ACA tax credits, many cancer patients will no longer be able to access treatment; an unfortunate accident could push families into crippling medical debt; and people living with chronic illness may not be able to afford life-saving medications. The health, wellbeing, and financial stability of millions of Americans is on the line.
