In 2022, North Carolina came closer than ever to expanding Medicaid and making sure that over half a million low-income, uninsured adults in our state can get health coverage. That’s right, after a decade-long stalemate, we’re making progress towards closing the coverage gap. In fact, the NC House has a hearing scheduled on their Medicaid expansion bill for today!

NC lawmakers need to hear from you RIGHT NOW! Can you send a quick note to make sure they know NC parents want them to expand Medicaid for low-income uninsured adults? Click here to send your note now.

What’s happening? After years of advocacy, state legislative leaders in NC are finally on record in support of Medicaid expansion, and we need your voice to help get it over the finish line! There are 10 years of research that demonstrate the positive impact of Medicaid expansion, including early detection of life-threatening diseases and a decrease in premature deaths for older adults aged 55-64.

Of course, everyone regardless of race, class, or zip code, deserves to have health care coverage, but there are still some people and communities in our state who have been left behind. Non-white North Carolinians have the highest rate of medical debt in collections and more than 20% of people in our rural communities lack health insurance altogether. Expanding Medicaid is the first step toward fixing these disparities!

Right now, MomsRising is at the legislature co-hosting a “Love Thy Neighbor, Expand Medicaid” advocacy day. Can you back us up by sending a letter to your NC lawmakers to tell them to expand Medicaid to low-income uninsured adults?

Expanding Medicaid is a great deal for our state, too! It will not only provide health care coverage for at least half a million North Carolinians, but it is also likely to generate savings for our state! Medicaid expansion can produce $100 million of savings in the first two years it’s in effect. Expanding Medicaid is a no-brainer—we can save thousands of lives and millions of dollars, too!
