Fall is my favorite time of year. It brings back some of my best childhood memories: playing in a big pile of crunchy red and yellow leaves, feeling the crisp air on my skin on nature walks as butterflies led the way, the first smell of my carved pumpkin. I am greatly indebted to my parents, who made sure these outdoor adventures were an integral part of my childhood. My eyes were never as wide and my imagination never as vivid as when I was out in nature.

So when I hear that today’s children have had less contact with nature than any generation in human history -- spending half as much time outdoors as kids like me did just 20 years ago -- I want to do something about it. Through my work with National Wildlife Federation's (NWF) “Be Out There” campaign to get kids outdoors and connecting to nature, I can help make sure today’s children have these same experiences.

That’s why I’m happy to be able to spread the word about Hike & Seek, sponsored by National Wildlife Federation, on October 16th in Seattle. This family outdoor adventure is a cross between a nature hike and scavenger hunt that brings families and friends together for some fresh fall air. The event also serves as a fundraiser to support NWF’s important conservation work.

Held in Seward Park, the event combines a 2.4-mile easy hike with fun and interactive "Stop & Study" nature stations, providing an exciting learning experience for children ages 3-12. The stations, manned by naturalists and wildlife experts, provide activities to test all the senses; see, hear, taste, touch, and smell nature's wonders. Every participant is given a map and guide book to direct their path and can receive a junior naturalist badge at the end of the hike.
Studies show outdoor time helps children stay healthier, enhances their imaginations and attention spans, decreases aggression, boosts classroom performance, and fosters a lifelong appreciation of the environment. So give your kids a break from TVs, computers and video games and get them outdoors to nurture their body, mind and spirit. Register for Hike & Seek today: www.hikeandseek.org!
